I am a self confessed Land Rover addict from sunny Surrey. Whilst I am no certified spanner guru I am trying to learn more about my Td5 90 to save on garage costs. I have owned it for just over a year and christened it on Salisbury Plain. Like many Land Rovers, mine recently started marking its territory on my driveway. Whilst I like to think it was sweating power my wife was less than impressed with the resulting oil patch. The leak appeared to be coming from the gearbox area. I have now taken it to a local specialist on 4 occasions and they have replaced every seal and gasket known to man and yet it still leaks. It has been confirmed as coming from the transfer box and I am now being advised that I need a replacement transfer box as there must be a crack in it?
Can anyone please shed any suggestions (in layman' terms) which may give me a steer before I get stung for the cost of another box? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, first job would be a messy one but it's got to be done. Get under there and give it a thorough cleaning as this will help you find where it's coming from. Replacing the transfer box is the easy but expensive option

Thanks. Just finished with the jet wash. I will have another look tomorrow!

If you can get a box cheap then simple fix with the right tools

Thanks. I suspect that given the amount of seals and gaskets that have been replaced I will probably end up buying a recon transfer box. I have read somewhere that you can get a different ratio box which is supposed to improve the drive (lower engine noise at 70mph). Has anyone any experience with this and is it worthwhile?

Fairly common swap, look for a discovery 200 or 300tdi transfer box. Plenty of info in the defender section. I was going to do it on my old defender but the Disco I'd bought to break was that nice I sold the defender
