I've narrowed a whine down to either transfer box or rear diff. Took off front prop, difflock engaged, whine still there. Rear prop off and whine disappeared. The next easy step I can see is changing the bearing behind the handbrake drum. Watched a few vids on it and it seems I can do it with transfer box in place. Anyone done it or tips .lt230 box.

Remove the prop and handbrake drum. Take out the speedo drive. Remove the oil seal, big nut and washers, take the flange off then the big circlip that holds in the bearing. You can then either use a slide hammer to remove the shaft with the bearing on, or loosely refit the flange and nut and knock it off with a hammer (best to change the flange anyway). Once the shaft is out remove the bearing by knocking it off, fit the new bearing then fitting is reversal of removal

Cheers mate. Replace flange aswell?

Aye, they're not expensive and they tend to wear around where the seal sits and it'll cause it to leak. Oh and refit with new seal, nut and fibre washer. Get a good quality oem seal too

I'll do that and if the whine goes, I'll treat myself to a new prop. I can't see any reason why it should wear unless prop put of balance. Refurbished box with only about 10 - 15k.
