Afternoon people,

I gave my range rover to my mechanic to try and source where this whine was coming from as i thought it could be a diff or wheel bearing but was told its the transfer box.

I also checked the oil in the diff's and transfer box n they are all topped up.

just wondering what my options are now on fixing it or replacement. pretty new to RR's and 4x4 but i'm sure its going to be expensive :(

And is there any chance it couldn't be the TB?

Dan

Ppl new to the vehicle usually complain about a whine and depedning on the age depends how severe it is. Doing a search will reveal most are put down to the bearings in the transfer box or diffs. But each vehicle is different. Some just live with the whine making sure fluids are changed regularly. There could be a million things in the drivetrain that could cause the whine and it may be an expensive process of elimination.

Had a recon transfer box from Ashcrofts. It has always had a lovely whine, a bit like a turbine. No problems in two years and many thousands on the clock.

i'll agree with you there Datatek.
aerofabrique the whines got to a point where its now louder than the v8 its self. im thinking its the transfer bearings but want to be 100% before i start paying out more money so might take it some where else for a second opinion. :(
and now the coolant over heats when stationary. but thats another day of searching on the net for an answer.

i had a look at Ashcrofts and i think that would be a last resort unfortunately.

If it only overheats when stationary, viscous fan is the most likely culprit. If it's diesel with aircon, I can give you a mod to use the electric condensor fans for cooling, if V8, you can still use the fans but you will need the viscous as well in some circumstances.

On the V8 electric fans are wired to assist viscous in over heat conditions as standard.

True, but they only operate in an "overheat" situation, too late IMO. With my mod you can set them to operate before an overheat occurs within the normal operating temperature range:)

Yes Keith i understand that, it was just for info purposes. They come on at low speed to assist viscous in engine high load situations. For instance ticking over in traffic and hot conditions with air con working.

my apologies its a p38 4.6 petrol/lpg. i'll check the viscous fan asap. also found i have no Lo range gears -_- and no sport button as it doesnt illuminate... and a leak in the windscreen. its also lacking power as i drove my cousin's p38 4.6 petrol ( same year) and that feels a lot faster. just a big list of problems but i knew what i was buying into when i got her.
On the whine issue my cousin said it sounds like it could be the hand brake drum slightly binding so i'll loosen that n see what i get.

Thank you again for the advise

I'd check the Transfer Box ECU too....

Get it on A Diagnostic, there could be faults logged in the Gearbox ECU and Transfer ECU...

Check the Transfer Motor is plugged in too....(this little beasty is the thing that actually changes the Ratio)

It has been known for the Transfer Box ECU to burn out..!!

I'll try and get it done tomorrow, luckily theres a place called Land Rover Solutions right next to where i work :D its just having a chance to get there before it closes!
If it is the transfer box ecu any idea on cost?
Regards
Dan

:D i think that may have been laziness on my part there, apologies.
I'm just hoping i havent brought a duff rangie as i definitely love it so far.

If the T/Box ECU is fried, also be sure to dismantle the T/Box motor, as their getting stuck on their own stator magnet chips usually cause the ECU to burn out. Clean out the chips and reassemble the motor afterwards, but do not open the part which bolts onto T/Box, as there are position sensors inside which you can quite easily mix up.
Mind you, buy an "auto" t/box ECU, the manual won't work on your car...

no luck with Land rover solutions didnt manage to get there til gone 6 and it was closed.

The whine has now turned into a rumble feels like i'm driving on a rumble strip on the motorway... so thats good news

Cheers for the advice Chort, as soon as i get the missus off my back i'll get under there n strip it and also check for any loose cables.
wish me luck lol

Managed to arrange for it to go in land rover solutions for saturday!

Regarding the 'no lo range'

i peaked my big head under and had a look at the transfer box area check and cleaned the contacts on the 2 pins that stick out under the selector motor (i think).

Didnt change anything so could be the ecu/motor, i'll take that off and check that when i get a chance unless saturday comes before hand.

p.s any ideas roughly how much diagnostics cost?

From a dealer - open your wallet and leave it on the counter (around £108 an hour)

An indy would do it for about Half

A friendly LZ'er nearby could do it for a cup of tea and posh biccys....

Didn't manage to get in into Landrover solutions due to work :( and over the weekend i parked it in a neighbours drive ad noticed a small oil leak ( i assume its oil) at the front by the rad, topped up the oil and noticed metal filings covering the dip stick, does this spell death for my rangie? :(

also on the gear box issue, it only goes up to 3rd and will bounce off the limiter but turning it on and off resolved the issue temporarily
slowly losing faith
