I'm having problems with a leaking transfer box. I got my Landy Guy to change all the seals; Since I got it back it leaks more than before and now has a booming sound when the power is on. He had another go at it but it's still the same; I'm just debating with myself if I should change the transfer box completely and go for a Discovery one. I plan on doing another trip to Morocco. I am trying to find out if I will loose much low down grunt when in heavy sand.
It coped fine on the previous trip. I haven't driven any other Landy's so can't compare, mine seems to loose power on long hills. On the straight flat it will maintain a steady 70 all day and night; I'm concerned if fitting a Disco transfer box is going to give me a whole set of different problems.
Has anyone noticed much difference when fitting a Disco T/box.

Low range is the same on both fenders and disco's. high range you'll struggle on hills in 5th, especially if you fit larger tyres. you're 110 sounds like every other fender I've driven.... lack of power is rarely down to the transfer box (if the correct one is fitted)

Defender has a 1:4 ratio and disco a 1:2 I think,

Means Defender has more grunt but suffers from lack of speed,

Disco tranny offers better MPG but suffers at hill climbs,

Tweeked pumps can offset both problems,

Lots of different ratios on LT230 Tboxes Depends on the serial number stamped on the box.

Was going off whats usually attached to a R380 :p

That said, just seen OP is running a 200tdi, so 5th isnt going to have much grunt anyway,

End of the day if the OP's tranny is leaking, its best to have a like for like replacement,

But I bow to Pikeys knowledge !

I fitted a RRC transfer box to my 200Tdi Defender yesterday, the engine is fairly standard but is running right as I've tweaked the pump and wound up the turbo and there's on problem pulling 5th up hills with quite a bit of gear in it and 235/85/16 tyres. I'm guessing there may be slightly bigger hills where you're going though.

Throw a huge intercooler on there and you'll be fine!

Hi, Thanks for the info. By tweaking the pump has it made the engine smoke at all?

They will all puff a bit,

Important thing is to mark the current setting before playing with it,

You can take it as far as 10% higher without any troubles,

I'm still having problems with this vibration coming from the drive train. I disconnected the front prop shaft as I could see a bit of play in the prop shaft and some play coming from the bearings on the transfer box. I will reconnect the front and disconnect the rear prop shaft to see it the vibration is still there. All looks quiet tight on the rear prop shaft. Where would I find the identification numbers on the transfer box? to find out what ratios I might have in my Defender. It's ex military 200tdi. It will cruise quiet happily at 70 all day and night. A guy who had a 90 travelling with me in a convoy suspected I had a Discovery transfer box as he thought I had a much higher cruising speed. If I do go ahead and have to change the transfer box I think I would like to change it like for like.

on a sticker on the rear face under filler plug and numbers stamped there too, youd ned the first 3 digits
