Hi everyone
The other week my defender just lost all drive. No clunks, clanks, grinding noises, nothing. Recovery truck picked it up, a few hours later it was working again. The other day it happened again, lost drive, got towed home, the day after it was working again. It's as if there is a fail safe switch or something. Any ideas?

no switch, is the high/low lever properly engaging into gear and not partly in neutral? it is adjustable. Have you tried driving it in diff lock when this occurs?

Tried shifting from low to high, tried the difflock, nothing. You can put it in gear and let the clutch out and nothing happens. Underneath nothing is moving (whilst still in gear with clutch out). Propshafts not going round.

then its output shaft from gearbox - splines have worn out, remove the pto cover plate and you will be able to see the shaft turning inside the transfer gear, before doing this jack one wheel up so that it will not drive off or over you!!

Not had chance yet. Was wondering if the car would go after a few hours if it was the output shaft. It's as if something is resetting itself.

It does sound like its in neautral .... when you shift through H-N-L etc does it feel like its going into gear with a positive feel to it ? or does it feel sloppy ? .
