hi,my transfer box has decided to die on me ,as you guessed its a freelander,2001 td4. the questions i need answers to are as follows:-

1.is there any differance between boxes with and without hill decent?

2.all thats damaged in box is the main pinion(so garage says),can i get one of them and just change that,if so wheres the best place to get one cheap?

3.is there a for sale section on here where i might buy a cheap transfer box?

thanks in advance for all replies, only just payed out 771 quid for new clutch and cylinders to be fitted,so scrapping car last option lol.

Well I would change the VCU, this is whats probably facked the IRD, then also check your rear diff.

thanks mate, ill ask about that if and when i get the parts i need to fix transfer box, sounds like its getting more expensive by the minuite lol.

Just had the same problem with mine(the missis`s)04 TD4, think the transfer box(IRD) is standard across the range, the most common failure is the VCU seizing up and stripping the teeth of the pinion, and or the rear diff.

The choices i had were,
1. fit a recon IRD, ( only 3 month warranty and only if new VCU fitted £250-£440) costing £600ish(with a £200 deposit incase the casing was unable to be recon`d) and flog the car sharpish.
2. fit a new IRD £990 and VCU. and keep the car.

as for just replacing the pinion gear, having seen the state of mine and what the stripped teeth did to the other gears inside the IRD (lots of rice sized peices of metal) I dont think just replacing that will be a long term fix.

and youll need 2 x new VCU bearings!!.

Unfortunatley had to go for option 2 as she has a few more payments on the car.

Regards

Ian.

New VCU bearings cost less than twenty quid so don't really come into the equation.

Big choice to be made, though!
