I've been having some "fun" with my 2002 TD4 in the last week, with coolant system (split hose, faulty radiator cap & knackered thermostat) got work done by local LR authorised service place. When the had car, they ran "Vehicle Health Check" which threw up a litany of issues. Solve one today by replacing defective brake switch, which also fixed HDC. Next stop will be replacing reverse switch.

One of the "big" items is the Transfer box pinion which they say is badly damaged. the part is about £60, it's the labour costs that'll kill me, so wondering if this is something I can do myself. I have a mate who has ramps, jacks, tools etc and he restored an old defender so would enlist his help.

According to LR it is takes a mechanic 1.5 hours to replace, so I'm assuming that it would take myself and mate about 3-4 hours. If anyone has replaced the Transfer box pinion, could they let me know if it's a "big" task to undertake?

it would be imo but if pinions got damaged teeth so will its partner, pinion can just be unbolted and removed after first removing prop

just realized your in ireland

shame as i have a spare part that bolts to the ird and front propshaft kept it from my old IRD

If pinion is damaged you will need change crown wheel too. And to set the crown wheel and pinion up you need to remove the ird and strip it.
