I have a 2004 landrover discovery(109,000 miles,FSH) which i have not had for very long..i took it into a garage for him to identify a noise i have coming from it..

The noise is there on overrun only at all speeds and only when the engine/transmission is engaged(it does not do it when you press the clutch in)it is a whining sort of sound the same sound as when a wheel bearing is failing,it is ther on overrun and while the car is deaccelerating.

He said the transfer box needed replacing..i then actually went to a different garage and just told them to change the transfer box which he put me a recon one in costing £600.

I picked the car up and the sound is still there..ive checked and the transfer box has been changed but i cant really go back to the garage as he only did what i asked him to do based on the original garages advice on what was causing the noise.

Would anybody know what this noise is likely to be as its obviously not the transfer box:confused::confused::confused:

hi i had a noise what sound the same coming from my 200 tdi only did it when it was in gear and i had the revs on it turned out to be the front diff where the prop meets the crown wheel the bearing had gone i found this when it tried to kill me by locking up on the a38 at 50mph not saying it is this but its something you could check as it sounds the same hope this helps

its not unusual for a t/box to be changed for a faulty diff brg ,there should be no up and down movement at the diff flange,

if it is stopping when you press the clutch and then comes when you release it then it sounds like your clutch release bearing.
