I'd first check the prop UJ's, front and rear, for movement. Then I'd swap round so the front end rotates, not the rear and see if the noise goes away. Based on that, then check the Tbox output seals and bearings.

hi, thanks for the reply....its a new prop on the rear, would the shaft have play in it if the bearings are worn because there is no play?thanks rob

Yes. Still try it with the front rotating and the rear on the floor. Thinking it might be an issue with the centre diff, it's not something I've heard before, so just thinking aloud what it might be .. :)

hello just reporting back...be have had the front up and back wheels on the ground and it does not seem to make the noise...could it be the back bearing in the tbox?the nut was very very tight and we had to chisel it loosen it up... ?thanks rob

are you sayin it doesnt make the noise with both front and rear wheels up, if so its nothing to worry its just the sudden change of power in the diff gears as only one axle was off the ground and so been spun

no it still makes the noise if both front and back are off the ground...with the back on the ground it does not make the noise!

hello, thanks for that..... i have ordered a bearing kit and will update with results when fitted next week...cheers rob

hello, just an update, we fitted the new bearings and seals to the tbox but noise still there! fitted another (borrowed) transfer box and the noise was 90% quieter but now have a similar but quieter noise from gearbox(and it jumps out of 3rd)!! i bought the gearbox and transfer box off ebay.....the seller wants nothing to do with the issues i am having, i have now bought another gearbox and another transfer box

Frying pan to fire come to mind. With the original box did you try running it with diff lock engaged ?

hi yes in and out of difflock . front prop on /off back prop on/off. on the ramp with back wheel off the ground and tbox cover off and we can hear a noise from tbox centre diff..but with borrowed tbox the noise not apparent in tbox centre diff but from the gearbox....when gearbox is in neutral and the truck is coasting the noise is still there...not able to test gearbox under load without tbox attached

hi another update after a lot of time wasted with 2nd hand gearbox and tbox i have bought a gearbox and tbox from ashcroft which are fitted into place now and just need xbrake and prop connecting and it should be all good!!

I think that just underlines that you are better off buying from a reputable source!
Glad you are on the way to getting it fixed!!

I would agree with that, when buying second hand boxes I buy at a price that expects it will need to be sent off for refurb, if it doesn't then it is a bonus!

final update, i have completed the conversion and its brilliant!!, also had an "extreme" bailey Morris prop made, ashcroft hardened half shafts ....and unrated diff, the drive is very smooth now....well worth the effort, i decided to replace all i could due to the v8 engine and i have also planned a trip to the algarve in portugal next year so want it to be as reliable as possible
