Hi,
I've been looking at a few Disco 2's recently, and am planning to view another this week.
However, the seller has mentioned that it "will not go into low range".

Before I bother considering this one any further, is this problem likely to be something as simple as the linkage needing adjustment, or as serious as a box about to expire?

more like bowden cale is seized than box problem ,it is possible for box to fail but that would be a very unusal one
 
The HI/LOW doesn have a linkage like the CDL, low is selected by the lever which moves a fork within the box

the question is how it doesnt go into low? u can't put it in cos the lever is stuck ... or u can put the lever in the low position but it doesnt engage, anyway, IMO for both cases u have to remove and open the T-box
 
why ,if lever is stuck it will be the cable ,if selector grub screw is loose you only need remove the selector housing on t/box 6 x bolts ,
 
When I bought mine, (300tdi) I could not move the selector lever in any direction. Did not take the mech long to sort out. Now I use it rather than lose it.

:eek: you are right, as usual when it comes about boxes;) ... off course that i thought about a stuck fork or a selector sleeve wear... why dont complicate things if possible?:D

I'll ask for some more info.
It's not clear if the lever doesn't move at all, or if it moves and nothing happens.

I recently bought a D2 auto. Quite a few of the ones I had viewed previously (and the one I bought) seemed to be stuck in high (lever doesn't move). It appears that if the transfer box isn't used then the lever / mechanism gets very stiff. By putting it in reverse and allowing just a little throttle on and off eventually the lever will move. (Not sure if this works on manuals?) Now I make sure that I put it in low at least once or twice a week and it is now fine.

stiff lever is one thing lubrication and use will help ,selection is by a dog clutch (castleated ring going over teeth on gear)so some aligning may help
 
Wasn't some of disco 2's made without low option because they had hill descent maybe that's what seller means
 
No, they've all got low ratios. They all have hill descent. Some have difflock but many don't, as there's traction control (possibly where you're confused) but due to popular demand, some have difflock as it became an option and some have the potential to have difflock retro fitted.

Clear as the mud these beasts can plough through because of difflock, traction control and low gears I hope!
 
I'd pop the cover off the t box and have a good look, get someone in the cab wobbling the lever and have a good ganders, it will be something very obvious, doubt it'll be needing a new box theyre pretty tough!
This is of course if you buy it!! Personally is be using that fault as a major bargaining tool!!
 
I asked the seller: "You mention "will not go into low range"
Does the lever move at all, or is it stuck in high ratio?"
The answer was: "its stuck in high range"

I suspect it may just be a lever/cable issue, so I might take a look at it this week.
It's an ebay one, so the lever issue may put off potential bidders.
