I seem to remember reading somewhere that there should be a lock nut under the red knob. Mine hasn't got one and is broken where it has wound on too far. Shuld there be one? If so what thread is it (guessing not metric!)

I imagine it will be unc, probably 1/4 or 5/8

it cant be unc thats coarse and its a fine thread, more likely bsf

Yes, you are right of course, I don't know what I was thinking, I should have said unf but bsf may be the one.

Series 2 resto I'm doing exactly the same...threaded rod protruding through red knob and we just broke it off should probably be the same as the yellow locknut 7/16 AF...I'll find out tomorrow...

yellow knob nut is 1/4 bsf

Think all the landys i've owned inc the one i have now didn't / doesn't have a nut under the red knob only the 2a gear knob has a nut under the knob

people remove them to get the gaiter off and because they arent a std nut dont get replaced if lost
