Get the car running then stop it, put the gear lever in neutral with the engine running, push the Hi-lo lever until it goes into lo, drive off again, you are now in low range. As there is no synchro it'll take a solid push.Not gonna fit 3 kids and all our camping stuff in a freelander lol.

To put it back into Hi, do the same thing, just move the lever the other way.
You won't have diff lock, so don't worry about it!
Unless some very clever previous owner managed to fit it!
Once in Low Range, you can use HDC ... if you wish.

It's fiddling with HDC that's pointed me to this switch probably being faulty. I can drive in lo; but from what I've gathered the ECU changes some settings to make it work better; but obviously not right now as it doesn't know.

As I never use it, I had forgotten exactly how it works.
The MODE button, to the rear of the selector lever.
In high ration you press it and S comes up on the instrument panel, for "sports" mode.
But if you shove the hi-lo lever into Low ratio, and press the mode button you get an M,.
I have dug the manual out so I'll now look thru it and quote what this does.....
"" Manual mode"
In Low range with Manual mode selected, the automatic transmission functions as a manual gearbox requiring the driver to move the selector lever manually to change gear." (It goes on about other stuff.)
