Hi,

I am new to Landies and to this forum. Based in France I have recently acquired an 88 petrol Series 3.
Overall in pretty good condition , excpet when I engage the 4X4 (yellow knob) it start to become very weird - difficult to describe , but she does not seem to drive straight, it seems like the wheels are locking from time to time - in fact I feel like I am a crab ! - any advice will be much appreciated. Could it be your locking your central differential and its binding because you are on pavement?
 
On a series there is no centre diff, when you are out of 4wd and in high range you are only in rear wheel drive, when you engage 4wd or put it in low range your go into 4wd but the front and rear prop are locked together, like a locked centre diff
 
Worth mentioning, dont drive any amount of distance in 4wd or low range on a grippy surface (tarmac), or do any manovering either, you will increase wear on the transmission and its not unkown to twist off half shafts

Only engage 4wd when offroad or the roads are very slippery. What it does is, as it's name suggests, is to lock the axles together, not a good situation on road surfaces .. it's a very different system to what landrover use now. Try to get hold of a handbook which will give you an idea of how the gearing works.
