Hi all,

I have a beautiful 2003 RR Vogue TD6 with116000 miles on the clock, which has started to flash up the dreaded TRANS FAILSAFE MODE!

It's just had a new compressor for the air suspension and the driveshaft had not been done when they were recalled, so that has also been done.

When I bought it 4 years ago it needed a new battery, as it was flashing up all the usual faults!,

The fault started whilst I was towing my horse up a steady incline, and it did not want to change from 4th gear. When I stopped and turned the car off, it cleared and I managed to get home.

However it came on again the next day, after driving the car for around 15 minutes. So it was taken to a garage and the oil was changed, after reading on the web the sealed for life was not such a good idea! The garage said the oil did smell burnt and they suggested a new transmission. However I have read this is not always needed.

I've had the faults read and it's come up with a long list-

Transfer box

5212 battery under voltage

52F2 INSTR 3 lost from CAN

52ED INSTR 2 lost from CAN

52E9 DME 2 lost from CAN

52EB DME 1 lost from CAN

52E7 ASC 1 lost from CAN

52EC ASC 2 lost from CAN

52FOH/21232 unknown code

52E8 EGS LOST From CAN

52F3 EGS LOST from CAN

Gearbox

37 Gear monitor 5 fault

Once I had these cleared it came up with -

Gearbox

37 Gear monitor 5 fault

If I drive the RR in manual and never use 5th gear, I don't have any problems. Also on some mornings, when it start the car, I have the HDC INACTIVE warning? Anyone got any ideas?? Help desperate female!

Thanks

Jane

Gearbox failure by the sounds of it.

Sadly in most of these cases, the gearboxes get their oil changed too late in their lifetime due to the early idea of "sealed for life"

I believe if you catch them early you could save the box

Sadly yours has started with the common problems at the usual failure milage :(

Best to get it checked out before driving it anymore

You may get away with just a new torque converter
Using the car could end up trashing the gearbox completely if it hasn't already !

Good luck

Worth checking that the alternator is charging properly and that the battery is OK. Should see 14.2 to 14.5 volts at the battery engine running at 2000rpm. Battery should read a minimum of 12.5volts before starting in the morning.

Also make sure the battery is not knackered. I had the same code (as well as many other mysterious codes) come up on mine a few weeks ago.

Replaced the battery and everything has gone back to normal since.

imo first fit a brand new proper grade battery(NOT secondhand)if that makes no difference I think its new gearbox time jane :(

Yep. Worked for me. But like Will says, make sure it's brand new and at least 95Ah.

If you do need a new box, there 's a few various companies advertising on ebay prices ranging from £1250-£1500 supplied and fitted (re-con/re-manufactured and torque converter )
I would have a chat with them and do some homework on them see if they have any long term happy customers. :)

HTH.
