Just about to fit the hi-cap sump on the LT230 but want to fit a cooler to the LT77.

First question is, has anyone done it?

Initial idea is to swap the sump plug for a banjo bolt and fitting that will return into the filler level plug hole, an aftermarket oil cooler in front of the coolant rad, fit an in-line electric oil pump on a thermo switch fitted in the cover for the gauze filter to control the pump and we should be in business???

Yeah, build a trans gaurd to protect it.

I figured that by filling the system in reverse, using the pump to suck oil in through the cooler pipe work I could empty and re-fil using the return line. When emptying switch pump manually with return disconnected, and then to refil, dunk return into fresh fluid and reverse pump until it comes out of the filler hole, re-fit the return line and job done.

I was wondering about trying to fit some sort of sight glass in there to view oil levels without having to touch a toolbox, but thats for another day.

you can get rear extension cases that have oil cooler option , i usually just swap the case

I'm planning to do the same - got one on my Chrissie present list. This is the cheapest supplier I could find.

Rocky Mountain Spares UK > Improved Engineered Parts and Accessories for your Land Rover

I remember fixing a broken coolant sight glass (with limited tools) on a stranded coach with 40+ pupils at the side of a Belgian motorway in 2005!! It got us to Germany - slowly!

Got a link or a name for a supplier James?

Really liked the initial idea and could be cheap enough to build up I think?

You doing a lot of heavy towing or heavy off road to heat the oil so much?

they were fitted to lt77 v8 rrcs ,also the same for some v8 military defenders, though defender is different to disco/rrc case, some cases can be drilled as they have the casting in place, ive done a few , i might have one ill look

I have a spare LT77 outside, if I remember I'll have a look for the castings and dismantle it some more.
