My trailer warning light has never worked properly, it flashes with the indicators even when there's no trailer attached. But just lately it started comin on on its own and staying on, even after the ignition is switched off:confused: . Whilst its on like this the indicators don't work so i need to sort it. It doesn't do it all the time, just intermittently. Anyone tell me whats goin on before i start rippin panels off. I wouldn't mind removin all the trailer light wiring to sort it, don't need a warning light to tell me a trailer is attached, the injun will do that:D

Sounds like a short circuit somewhere, you'll be needin a multi meter or couple of lengths of cable and a bulb.
You may find a cable has worn through so check all places where the cable goes through bulk head or take apart the trailer socket first.
In the trailer socket look for water or loose wires ( if the wires have not been tinned or twisted properly a strand of wire may not be in one or more of the connectors)
Seeing as you say it's never been right you'd be best to check the whole circuit from one end to t'other.
But check the trailer socket and for rubbed cables first as that may find the problem. ;)

Isn't there some gizmo that makes this light flash under certain conditions? (e.g. high current draw) I was thinking amybe could just disable/remove it to solve the problem easier

Yep its called a flasher unit and then there's your hazard warning switch good luck disabling/removing it. ;)

Well done to you guys, twas indeed the flasher unit (was bit on the 'melted' side) - replaced it with new and its sorted.

Yer not all sarky bastids:D

Can this cause a flat battery? I picked up a 2005 Td5 on Friday and the trailer dash light is flickering. I got a flat over Sunday night with voltage registering at all. 24hrs to charge the battery. I'll look at changing the flasher unit as I can sometimes here it clicking when the ignition is first turned on.

I've had a similar thing. Except mine is consistent. I did a pre-emptive change on the flasher unit that was sounding somewhat arthritic just after I bought the truck.

Now on every indicator use, the trailer tell-tale lights on the first blink and then goes out.

I'm assuming this most likely due to using a sub-optimal flasher unit but other thoughts welcome.

nar - the flasher checks the load on the system on the first bulb light and then acts accordingly. Thats why the trailer light lights up once.

It also proves the trailer light is working which the new MOT test looks for. You can fail because it doesn't flash.

My trailer light is on constantly!! Only been on for the last month or so?
But indecators work as they should??

Would this still be the flasher relay?

Should also add:
I have LED lights
Have new relay for this
Trailer light never used to work at all?

They are right. The trailer repeater is supposed to flash once then stop if it doesn't detect a trailer or continue if a trailer is plugged in and the corresponding indicator works ok

When i connect the electrics from van my light doesn't come on but all indicators and brakes work fine. Is this normal because i haven't seen the light at all
