After getting extremely stuck last night in my mondo hippo in a sub soiled field I noticed that the n/s front wheel was just spinning with no weight on it and the o/s front wheel was not trying to turn at all. TC light was on.

Now I am under the impression that if one wheel is spinning quicker than other the ABS/TC will apply braking to the spinning wheel and therefore forcing drive to the the other wheel ?

Or am I missing something here ?

Yep,

... the propshaft

My guess it needs the complete 4WD system working so the TC understands. You've taken half of the drive system away.

This is what I am wondering as I am not sure how the sensor's work exactly. But saying that I have heard the T/C cut in when accelerating in mud/slippy surfaces in mondo mode.

Confused !

As was said do you have a rear prop shaft? A lot of them get taken off due to VCU problems leaving you with a 2wd car which will sit happily in a mud hole all day. Of course you could have a problematic diff set up somewhere anyway. Have you had the car long or experienced these problems before? Did you try the HDC at all?

TC will/should still work on front wheels even if prop is missing. If you've not heard it you'll have a fault somewhere.

Yes the car is only 2wd and it was my own fault it got stuck but noticed the TC was not working properly while trying to get it out. Surely the front wheels should still activate TC if the are moving at different speeds ?

That's what I thought chaser guess i will have to check the abs sensors tomorrow. The other day I had HDC on I got the three amigos, turned the ignition off and on again and it was fine so maybe I have a dodgy/dirty sensor.

Will check and let you know.

Tend to agree if you've had 3 amigos. Other thing is, had you cooked the brakes causing fade or didn't they come on at all?

Never thought of brake fade, possible as we spent 2 hours trying to get out and the TC light was on but not locking the wheel. Never had the 3 amigos again so unsure on that ?

will check tom

Unless I am missing something? - in Mondo the power has three ways to go.
N/s front wheel, O/s front wheel and IRD to missing prop?
If N/s front spins and O/s front has traction then TC kicks in and brakes N/s front this puts more power thro' O/s front and IRD. If IRD has no resistance then the power goes that way trying to increase the push from the rear?
If it's only lightly stuck then the front back transmission split may just pull you out but sounds like it just got too stuck?
Without some resistance on the IRD from either rear wheels with traction or the TC acting on the rears - it ain't gonna work.
So what did I miss? :scratching_chin:

The fact that the n/s front wheel was just constantly spinning and o/s wheel wasn't trying to drive at all. When in theory the T/C should lock the N/S front wheel to stop it spinning and therefore transfer torque to IRD and O/S front wheel ? If the O/S front wheel was locking then I could understand loss of torque due to missing prop but it wasn't even locking ? Checked the sensors and all is OK with them and tested the TC on some wet grass to night one wheel at a time and it seems to operate OK now .

TC is only an assist, not a 'get you out of mud at all costs' clause. It will work on so called normal slippery surfaces like a Focus or an Astra, etc. Seems like it's working fine, the conditions just got the better of it. Even a Range Rover will sit and spin if the surface is icy enough - been there about a fortnight ago.

Yes it was up to the sills and well and truly stuck, my own stupid fault ! We were shooting on a stubble field and ran on to an area that had been sub soiled and didnt realise until it was to late and 2 days of rain made it like treacle !! A mate turns up and says "I will get my boy up here he will pull ya out". Well Jesus he turned up in a Hi Lux that must of had 5' ground clearance and wheels/tyres off a john deere it was like BIGFOOT !!!!! Any way a quick strap hooked on and a quick pull and I was out !! He didn't even engage 4wd !!!! Made my little Hippo look like a toy !!
