i have i 300tdi and it's needing the track rod ends doing, i have been told that it takes around 2 hours per side, is this about right? it's got abs but i don't know if this makes a difference, cheers fellas.
 
been told by a poor mechanic then ,undo nut 19mm on joint ,hit end of arm hard till joint pops out ,both ends ,undo clamps ,hit with hammer around tube on hard surface where joint thread sits till joint is loose ,fit new one to same threads left out as old one
 
Job time largely depends how quickly the old ones come off...ball end isnt normally a problem but threads can often rust up. Use of things like WD40 and heat greatly improve the likelyhood of removal.

my first one didnt take that long and it was rusted solid... ended up resting it on a large stone and ****ting it with a sledge hammer..

once they been done once ya can change em in 15 mins...

you mean if you used britpart and you need to do them every month?-)
 
A bit of 'gentle' persuasion with a 5ft gravel bar saw my old ones pop out within seconds. :D
 
i got me a trock rod end splitter for about 5 quid in bulgaria last summer, and the thread to the rod was persuaded with a 3ft lever: 30minutes work with tea break and coppaslip round... and methinks they were old (mind, 1978 series old, not disco old!)
 
Replaced my trackrod end and then 1000 miles later at an MOT I was advised there's slight play in the ball joint.
Surprised, as the ball joint was a LR genuine part so that was not a guarantee of quality this time.
This time it only took 20 mins to replace with a new OEM part including getting tools out, jacking up and taking the wheel off etc etc.. thanks to copper grease.:D

I would say LR parts are better than shippart but they are still not know for superb quality

My replacement was manufactued by Lemforder thats a name for German quality, again in my belief of 'go for quality and it's fit and forget'. :D
