To add some balance to the discussion - I've only ever known the Toyos - they're what came on the disco. Still on there a year later, they have worn very well and yet I've had no trouble on road with grip or noise; good grip and noise is similar to that of any large car running 255 width rubber or wider.
Off road behaviour is great, for what I've put them through. It must be said that the D2's traction control may, I feel, help cover up a less aggressive tyre's shortcomings (not a bad thing!)
