Evening all,

I have a 2"receiver with a drop plate on a 2001 Defender. Is it ok to tow a trailer with it?

Bit more info?

What exactly do you mean by 2" receiver? Is this a standard landrover fitment, or aftermarket?

Any chance of a pic? And what sort of trailer?

It's from safari equipment and has a detachable drop plate with a pin, it braces to the chassis with supports. Il get a photo tomorrow. I havnt got the trailer yet but looking at one around 3500kg capacity for collecting wood.

Have you asked them?

Would think if it is made to fit a Def it will be for 3500kg, but well worth a check.

The 2" receiver and drop plate from Safari Equip is NOT type approved as towing equipment.

If your vehicle is pre 1997 you do not need to use type approved towing equipment.

Post 1997 (OP vehicle is 2001) then if your vehicle is taxed as a commercial N1 vehicle it is legal to use non type approved towing equipment

If vehicle is taxed as M1 then you must use type approved towing equipment.

For a 2001 Defender if it is hard top or pick up legal to use. If a SW then illegal.

We have used the SE 2" receiver for towing on commercial Defenders and they work well, however they can rattle a bit.

just remember your towing LIMIT loaded is 3000kg including weight of unladen trailer. ok for you guys, all us gaylander drivers are limited to 2000kg, which is lucky as my two ponies and my unladen trailer are under the 2k kg limit lol.

nice knowledge there brendan, i got lost reading it lol

when i checked towing limits for my freelander the freelander was 2000kg max trailer weight loaded. all other landrovers were 3000kg :(
just saying what i found. stand to be corrected
Sorry pal but you're wrong. Defenders and discoverys and range rovers can tow 3500kg

My 89 handbook has similar. And tows 3500kg as well.

What I find interesting in those tables is the maximum off road towing weights. I wonder how many have read that.

Not the several I have recovered from sticky situations towing heavy trailers, that is for sure! :D
