Ive just towed using my 300tdi for the first time and to be honest im not very impressed:(

The trailler was a twin axle and weighed 1650-1700kg.
As the landy is meant to be able to pull 3500kg i thought that this wouldnt bother her much but in fact she really struggled.

Does anyone else have experience of pulling a similar weight?

disco's are the same as any other landrover. they will pull a house down in low box but put a loaded trailer behind them and show them a slight incline and you might as well get out and push.the weight yo state would overload a 35cwt transit so if you bear in mind that you were trying to pull more than a transit will carry in a passenger car what do you expect.:)

When you put it like that i guess your right.
Ive towed the trailer before using a merc sprinter van and just assumed that the landy would be able to do a better job.

Has anyone any experience of upgrades?
Exhaust systems bigger intercoolers and chipping etc?
Im on quite a tight budget(arent we all) so whats the best way of getting more go for less pennies?

Hi i tow a single axle van of 1600kg with my td5 .I towed 700mile last year with it in on one trip and found it 100 times better than my volvo v70 i used the year before ,only thing i found is its not very good at pulling away on gradients tend to have to dip clutch to get revs up but alltogether not bad i averaged 23mpg which is 9 more than the v70,anyway ive just fitted an egr blanking plate to mine last week and its like a different car ,better throtle responce and alot quicker it was £3.40 on ebay well worth it,im going to get a plugin power upgrade soon will keep the forum imfoemed how i get on good luck gazv70

Thanks for that Gaz.
I also have the egr plate in and loved the difference it made but its just not enough.

The time i REALLY needed more power was on the motorway between 45 &60.I really had to hold it in 4th for ages to get enough speed to use 5th.
Pottering around the villages and on the A/B roads wasnt too bad.

Im looking into getting a larger intercooler as this looks as though it might be the cheapest way of getting some more power.Bellautoservices do them for £200.

Has anyone got one fitted already. If so how much of a difference did it make?

Thanks

If you are struggling to pull away in high ratio try using low ratio to start moving then double de clutch to change to High and ree select the main gear to cary on going.

Bit of an art but does make it easyer

£200 for a intercooler wow thats alot cheaper than what i have been looking at
£600+vat argghhhhh
the intercooler does make a massive amount of differance though i have been quoted an increase of around 35bhp which should take the 300 tdi upto 143bhp and a torque increase to around 250ibs/ft which is not bad at all

Hi a egr blanking plate is exhaust gas recycling plate it goes inline of the pipe suplying exhaust gases to the inlet manifold so your engine(diesel)draws in air and exhaust fume into the engine, by blanking the exhaust part you improve performance of your engine without loosing any mpg they can be bought on ebay for £3.50 and easily fitted, the only drawback is that you might have to remove it for the mot because the emmitions will have gone up because your no longer recycling them back into the engine ,well worth trying what a diference to my 2001 td5 its like a rocket!!!cheers gazv70
