Thanks for the comment, Turboman. I'd be surprised if Land Rover had issued retrospective advice to owners of older vehicles, if only because of the difficulty of tracking down owners of older models without using the "recall" system. Has anyone seen anything from the Company to this effect? They actually went the other way with Range Rovers - my Repair Operations Manual (AKM3630, 7th edition) still shows a 2000kg limit for over-run braked trailers, but some years ago I did manage to get Land Rover to admit it should be 3500kg for all ages of Range Rover.

Afraid I haven't researched it anything like as thoroughly as that. It was really what is now legal to tow that I was talking about. My suggestion was based mainly on hearsay from friends with series. and also on the fact that several buyers guides give towing weights for classic lrs.
 
They aren't tow cars really. Not proper towing. Its just a bit iffy keeping up with modern traffic and that makes them a little bit unsafe and perhaps. Trust me, after your 300tdi RRC you'll think WTF have I done if you use a S2a to tow something over 800kg. Ignore the 2 tonne figure (my 88 said the same), my Mondeo is limited to 1.8t I think and tows about twice as well as my series did!

I know some people have had good experiences towing in them, but I didn't :D
 
As for cloning: is it putting an SII id on a coiler that offends, or is it any cloning? Is an early SIII with a very late SIIA id as bad? And what about ones that were done in, say, 1995 before the rules were tightened? Like (according to the seller) CUSTOM CAR HOT ROD LANDROVER SERIES LWB 109 200 TDI PAS HARDTOP COIL SUSPENSION | eBay for instance. Come to to think of it... might be worth a look?

Does need a well set up and tuned series and trailer, a more powerful engine(2.5na,Tdi, Perky, Isuzu), will obviously help a lot with the performance.
I didn't know slow vehicles were unsafe, I never feel so safe as in me tractor, tis built like a brick outhouse, I would barely feel a collision with most cars :D
 
no idea about back then, but the maximum towing weight is now derived from the max weight a vehicle can move from a standing start on a 12% gradient, and having a low bax makes landys pretty good at this, so the max 3.5T is applied, this being the max you can have on an overrun brake system IIRC. over this, and you need independant brakes, older fenders had a max of 6.5T IIRC is using independant brakes.
 
Not sure about the legal angle, but my Stage One V8 towed over 3 tonnes without a problem, and the brakes (uprated as standard to twin front cylinders and bigger drums on the Stage One) were well up to the job.
A Stage One with gas conversion is definitely another angle to consider.
They're also a hoot to drive - a good one will embarrass hot hatches at the lights. No auto box or power steering as standard though.
