Hi all I'm taking delivery of a t plate 2.0 xedi station Wagon on Monday and I wondering if on my licence (passed 2002) can I tow a caravan the one in question is a challenger 400se think its weight is 830kg does anyone know if this combination will allow me to legally tow or will I need to take the extra test?

the laws have changed but as i understand it you have to pass a towing test i think ,but do not take my word for it go on the dvla web site it will tell you there

There are loads of towing threds on here. I would suggest a search.

But they probbably wont answer ya cos its bit of a complicated minefield.

That helps alot! Also found this to help

Enter the details of the towing vehicle and trailer in boxes X, Y and Z (you will find these details in your vehicle manufactures handbook and on the trailer manufactures weight plate which is usually riveted to the 'A' frame near the towing hitch)
X
Unladen kerbweight of towing vehicle
---------------------------- KG
Y
MAM weight of towing vehicle
---------------------------- KG
You may tow a trailer on a category 'B' car driving licence if the calculator above has shown the following:
If 'Z' is weighted at or below 750 KG 'Y' + 'Z' does not go above 4250 KG
or
If 'Z' is weighted above 750 KG but that weight is less than 'X' and therefore 'Y' + 'Z' is equal to or less than 3500 KG
You will need to take a test and gain the B + E entitlement for your driving licence if the above calculator has shown the following:
If 'Z' is weighted at more than 'X' or
If 'Y' + 'Z' is more than 3500 KG
Once you have the B+E on your licence it does not matter if the MAM of the trailer is higher than the towing vehicle as long as you do not load the trailer to more than the towing capacity of the towing vehicle.
Z
MAM weight of trailer
---------------------------- KG

Thanks again will add them up and see how it comes out any idea where to find the weights if the freelander? I'm guessing Parkers?

The short answer is you're good to go - no need for any towing test.

If you want the figures here you are:

A 2.0 xedi has a kerb weight of 1550Kg and a max gross of 2050kg.

So with your licence you can drive the fully laden Freelander at 2050kg and tow a trailer of up to 1450kg. That gives your licence's max allowed weight of 3500kg.

So your small caravan at well under a tonne is no problem.

Enjoy. ;)
