Hi there,

So, prob with the indicators. When there is nothing connected to the tow socket they work a treat.

Once I plug in the trailer they indicate really fast and dimly.

Today I replaced and changed:
The 12N socket
The wiring to the socket from the loom by connecting the tow electrics to the back of the lights terminals on the landy (latest 7 vote cable)
Cleaned all Earth connections
Replaced any old dodgy looking connectors.

Sadly, it's still the same.

Would I be right in thinking the flasher unit/relay ain't up to the job?

Series 3 petrol 2.25l and the flasher unit is the 2 pin variety.

Many thanks.

from what i know they are thermal relays, so its a bimetallic strip of given resistance that heats up and makes contact, and the rest is mathematical equation of bulb wattage, voltages and resistance. so yeah, basically if you change the load (add 2 more bulbs) the indicators change speed.

pain in the ass as i know from personal experience how thorough you have just been to try and cure it.

i know it doesnt fix your issue, but i recently rewired the corner with a maypole TEB7AS, which is a 7 way relay system in kit form. just needs a generous 12v feed and then uses the standard loom only as a trigger for the relays, no load into original loom and completely bypasses any issues with standard wiring or architecture. to be frank its a neat bit of kit and i am very happy with it

That's a neat bit of kit Darren. Might go down that route myself. I rewired a while back making up my own loom, but I only went as far back as the front wing just after it all came out of the bulkhead, so all the dodgy old black copper stuff behind the dash is still taking the full load. Headlights and main beams are on relays mounted up at the front though.

Darren, that's a clever piece of kit. If I can't find a better relay then this looks the way to go.

What I don't get tho' is the vehicle is designed to tow but 42 years later the indicators are playing up. Surely it wasn't like that when it wa built.

I wired in a 12n socket straight to the loom. When I tested with a trailer board (with bulbs not LEDs) it all worked fine but if anything the indicators flashed a little bit slower. I've no idea what flasher unit is fitted.

I wish mine was like that, with a trailer board attached they flash like demented things.
Defo having trouble finding a 2 pin relay that is heavy enough at the moment.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, my indicator relay is 3 pin....it works fine with the tow socket though.

I think I may have found a solution, a Lucas SFB130 indicator unit, 89w load so it should cope with a trailer

Ru
The one I posted up would do hazards as well ie all indicator lights flashing at once.[/QUOTE
Right got it. Now I know why they have 4 pins. Hazards must have been an optional extra in 1975 coz mine ain't got them. Good idea to retrofit with the bigger 4 pin unit tho'.
