Looking on Microcat parts list it appares you could have the Borg Warner transfer box with an internal oil pump that is the forerunner to the P38 transfer box. Too be on the safe side, I'd now advise removal the prop-shafts if your going to tow the vehicle, remember that the vehicle being towed must be MOT'ed & Taxed to be legally towed on the road.

and can only be towed on a rope or bar legally to the nearest "place of safety". That'll be a lot closer than 15 miles.

That really depends on where the "Tow Starts" depending on who's asking....:rolleyes:....:doh:

Also depends on what classes kyotekid67 has on his licence, if he can tow a heavy trailer...

Having found that you can't legally tow it & will have to trailer it, for future reference and from the 1986 MY owners handbook. (this is for all RRC fitted with the LT230 transfer box with the figure 8 shape on top of the lever, NOT the BW)

"Vehicle recovery-towed
If the vehicle should suffer a breakdown or accident damage and it becomes necessary to make a towed recovery, it is essential to adhere to one of the following procedures depending on the type of tow to be undertaken.
This is because the Range Rover has permanent four-wheel drive and is fitted with a steering lock.

Towing the Range Rover(on four wheels)
Set the main gearbox in neutral and set the transfer box in neutral with differential unlocked.
Set the ignition/steering lock in position '1' to release the steering lock.
Secure towing attachment to the vehicle.
Release the handbrake.
WARNING: Unless the engine is running, brake servo and steering effort cannot be maintained. This will result in a considerable increase in pedal pressure being required to apply the brakes
Suspended tow by breakdown vehicle
Disconnect the propeller shaft from the axle to be trailed.
If the front axle is to be trailed it will also be necessary to set the ignition/steering lock key in position '1' to release the steering lock. the steering wheel and/or linkage MUST be secured in a straight ahead position but the sterring lock MUST NOT be used for this purpose.
The vehicle can then be attached to the breakdown vehicle and raised."

According to the factory manual (MY 1986 to 1989) they state:
"TOWING
Note the towing procedure for previous models applies to vehicles fitted with Borg Warner transfer gearbox. The main gearbox and transfer gearbox must be in neutral when the vehicle is being towed."

I would also assume that removal of propshaft applies if trailing one axle.

No I obviously didnt. Sorry - read it now but maybe he didnt read the first paragraph either. Just dont want jerks towing wrecks on the road with no insurance. Could be ur car or mine. Just get a frigging trailer ffs?

OK Point made.
I get the idea now, I need to use a trailer. As I am not a jerk, or was aware of the fact that any towed vehicle needs tax and mot, but thankyou to everyone who has pointed this out to me.
I guess its off to find my local trailer rental establishment.

Nothing personal Kyote but was info that u needed that u obviously didnt have b4 u posted the question? Good luck anyway. Sure u cant borrow a trailer off a mate? Even a rental place - if its sitting there on the forecourt surely a few quid is better than nothin??

Thanks, it wasn't taken personally, any info is greatly received.
Unfortunately none of my mates have a car trailer, so I will check my local directory. Hopefully get 1 fairly cheap.
 
U gotta towcar?
I gotta Legacy but dont think that would be legal - specially in this weather. Fraid u gonna have to wait mate. Can hopefully help u when the weather is better - wouldnt tow for for myself let alone someone else...........
 
Yes I got a towcar, a R/R of course, the 1 in my avatar. OK Thanks for the offer, but I need it moved by the 13th of Feb, or I pay another months rental. Will take a look around Weston to see if there is anywhere local to borrow a trailer from.
