Hi again, does anyone know if it will be OK to tow an auto if I put the Hi/Low range box into neutral  as I tried it with my manual RR, put it into 1st gear and let the clutch out, and it never moved, so will doing this disconnect the drive from the wheels???

with the transmission in neutral, it can be towed, but onkly for a very short distance and very slowly - not sure of the exact figures, but sommat like 5 miles under 20mph.

I thought it was about 30 miles max distance at a top speed of 30mph? But I guess it depends on wot box its go in it?

If the transfer box is in netual theres no drive to/from the wheels to the autobox, put auto box in park and run the engine at idle for brakes/steering power.

DO NOT TOW THE CAR, well until you have read this post anyway!

you need to put the car in tow mode, to do this put the car in N and then under drivers seat put a 10 amp fuse in position 11,put ignition on watch dash and it will say tow mode!

this must be done if towing on 4 wheels, if towing on two, you need to disconnect the prop from the diff that is to be in contact with the road!

failure to do this could seriously harm your gearbox!!!

 SORRY should have explained fully to start with.

I have a '72 manual classic, and also a '83 auto classic, and it is the '83 I need to tow.

Thanks for all the replies by the way.

But can I tow it :confused2:

I suspect you have a Transferbox Gear Lever with H-N-R on it and not a button on the dash to change from High to Low Range...plus how far do you want to tow it?

Hi, yes that is what I have, a gear lever, with H-N-L on it, and I want to move it approx 15 miles.

Is it ok to tow it this sort of distance without any lasting/expensive damage?
