My 97 Disco 300TDi Auto seems to have a problem with the towbar electrics .

borrowed a horsebox from a friend it all seemed to work ok but no right indicator on the trailer, checked bulb in trailer, it was fine and was also power to it when the indicator was turned on to the trailer indicator but I guess not enough to make it flash.

So I cleaned all the pins in the socket on the Disco where you plug in the trailer but still would not make right indicator flash.

Tried trailer on the friends landy and the indicator worked so must be something on mine causing the problem.

Don't know if this is relay problem or the socket it's self on the Disco.

The towing indicator lights up when towing and we use indicators and also audio bleep or does the bleep mean there is a problem with the system ?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

strip open the back of the socket i think its 3, 8 mm nuts to undo and check the wiring in the back as they are nutorious for cloging up with mud/water and rusting out!

Hi Giftedboy

i have a 1998 d1 300 tdi auto the problem you have is either the tow plug socket is faulty or you have a problem with the wiring from your rear lights to the tow socket on the disco.

everything seems to work on mine but i don't have an indicator beeper so either on yours it means there is something wrong or on mine the beeper is not working but i didn't think i had one, but having said that i used to have a d2 before the d1 and that had a beeper so i don't know.

Thanks guys,
Ive cleaned all the pins and removed the wires and ensured there tight in the back of the socket.
When I reasembled it was getting about 10.5 volts on both indicator pins thought I'd cured it but tried it on the trailer and still no right indicator flashing will have to look at the wiring tonight from the rear lights to the socket. I'm assuming you would get a bit of drop in voltage as it running through the wiring , could it be the relay not giving enough voltage maybe?

Check the voltage at the relay if you suspect it. There shouldn't be that much a voltage drop, sounds more like increased resistance i.e. dry joint, rather than a short.

Happy hunting :)
