Those are for clipping on trailer brake safety cable. A lightweight cable that should trailer come off the ball hitch pulls its brakes on to stop a runaway [ one hopes ] and then snaps.
Not a tow point of any sort.

Here's a clearer photo of the back of my car. It's a genuine Land Rover part - it's got these rings attached to it, would it be safe to attach a bow shackle to these for recovery, or would I still be better off just attaching the loop of a tow strap directly to the tow ball? If not, I am intrigued as to what those rings are for!

Those loops are points to attach a break away cable. They aren't rated for towing or recovery as far as I know. I would use the tow ball. And for competition use such as RTV trials the towball would be more than sufficient and safe in the eyes of the Motorsport governing body MSUK.

Where towballs are an issue is in places like Oz or the USA where they typically use tow balls like this:

Which are essentially just a large single bolt with a fancy head. These are the ones that can shear off. The type you have I've never heard of a failure are even recommended by organisations like the ALRC for competition recovery use. The ALRC has the best part of 60 years history using Land Rovers for serious off road competition use.

I cannot believe you seriously asked that question ...
I don't think you should try and tow/recover anything.

Compared to you that may be true but I assure you to most others and to several on here it's wildly innacurate.
I wasn't born knowing stuff either, I worked hard and practised a lot to gain a smattering of the basics.
I made mistakes, sometimes twice.
Fortunately none as stupid as attaching two cars together using an inadequate anchor point.

Understanding the tensile and shear strength/properties of steel/other materials is something I would suggest that you should attempt to comprehend, or at least have a fleeting understanding of, before you attach your 2.25t car to another and instruct 80 horses to run in the opposite direction.

There's absolutely no need whatsoever for your condescending attitude.

I've come here to ask questions. Like I said in my post, I'm new to this vehicle and keen to learn more about them and improve my knowledge and skills, hence joining this forum.

I consider myself very knowledgeable and experienced in various other things in life and whenever some new person comes along in the various forums and Fb groups I'm a contributor to on those topics I make a point of trying to be courteous and helpful, even if to me, their questions may seem very obvious and fundamental. One snarky comment from some smart arse can often be the difference between someone becoming really interested in a thing for life, or being put off forever.

Thankfully not everyone seems as much of a gatekeeping know-it-all **** as you.

Another lesson, the site software removes swear words. Swearing outside 'Anything goes' is not good form. Inside AG it's a different matter and you sound like you might be good value. (You'll have to ask nicely how to get around the filters though).
