The converter lock-up clutch wears through its lining (usually between 80k and 100k miles) causing the clutch’s ‘continuous slip’ mode to no longer work effectively and you start to feel undamped torsional vibrations through the driveline – particularly in the higher gears at lower vehicle speeds.

If you watch the rev. counter needle while you can hear/feel the vibration you’ll see it bouncing around by 100rpm or so.

The LUC fails in this way because the soft alloy used by GM for the valve blocks wears to the extent that, at higher mileages, the torque converter control & enable valves leak/cross-talk and the clutch sees a reduced hydraulic pressure. Unfortunately, therefore, neither changing the fluid nor replacing the torque converter provides anything more than a temporary cure.
