Just bought a 98 v8 disco,
Checked all the levels, the auto gearbox oil is low,
How do i top it up ?
What oil does it take ?

first of all, have you actually checked the level properly?

Engine on, run through forward and reverse gears then check

I drove the car 15 miles last night,
Went out to it this morning, checked the auto gearbox dipstick level, nothing on it !

So i start the car, drive it forwards then backwards and check the dipstick level with the engine still running ? or do i turn the engine off ?

Engine running, you don't have to actually drive anywhere - just select drive neutral reverse, then check

excellent, il do it tonight and see what the level reads,

How do i top it up ?
Is it normal red dextron auto fluid ?
Car changes gear fine, just thought i would check the level, as ive just bought it,
Also,
The diffs have level plugs i guess ?
Transfer box does this have a level ?

My first 4x4 ! lol !

top it up down the dipstick tube a bit at a time and keep checking the level.

Unless your disco is a 98 D2 then u check the level via a gear box level plug.
One of the 3000 improvements on the D1 :)

Checked level properly this time, still not on dipstick,
Il top it up through the dipstick tube.
Ive got red power steering fluid, this the same fluid for the autobox ?
Or shall i buy some better stuff ?

Any make that's to the old Dexron llB or the newish Dexron lll spec will do.

Then ask the question where has the fluid gone to, you must have a leak.

Auto box fluid done,
Cant see any leaks from anywhere,
It took about a litre, not sure how much the auto box holds ?

In total around 9 litres but half or so remains within the torque converter when draining the gearbox but for topping up you go by the level indicated on the dip-stick.
