Hi. I bought my 02 plate TD4 a few months ago. Not driven it yet as i knew it had a few jobs that needed doing. One of which is a knocking coming from the top of the engine on the drivers side. This increases and decreases with the engine speed. At first i thought it might be the cam shaft but now i am having second thoughts. I have noticed that the injector that side has been replaced at some point as it looks new. Could this be causing the knocking noise from the top end on that side? I am in the process of replacing the rocker cover gasket as that is leaking so will be able to have a look at the cam shaft when it is off. I have removed the injectors yesterday which came out really easily, a bit of twisting and gentle levering with screw driver and they where out! This tells me that they have all been out resently. What sort of things should i be looking for once the rocker cover is off? Thank you in advance for any help and suggestions that you can give.

Knocking is more than likely due to an injector. As they came out that easily, it would suggest someone has already had a go at sorting it.
Quite often the replacement has been incorrectly installed, damaging the washer so it doesn't seal correctly. I'd replace the washers on all of them and throw a bottle of cleaner through before you dish out lots of cash on it.

Thanks Mike. After reading some posts on here it did get me thinking it could be something to do with the new injector that has been fitted. Asked the previous owner about this and they said it was changed as it wouldn't start properly. The injectors are not blowing and there is no soot up the stems of the injectors. I will replace the copper washers on all of them, luckily they are all attached to the injectors! It there anything i should know about refitting the injectors? I have to replace the rocker cover gasket yet once i figure out how to undo the 10mm nuts that are on the bottom of the injector studs. Going to have to buy an extra long reach socket by the look of it.

Nothing special about refitting, just remove clean around the seat, check for crud, replace washer. Only torque to 10Nm, this is where most go wrong and over do it.

Has the correct injector been fitted as a replacement? There are two types, one for manual box and the other for auto box. It's unlikely to be the cam assembly as that's very robust and long lived.

Good point, the auto has a slightly larger injector.

Ah you might be onto something. The 3 old ones are marked 0445110 049 the new one is marked 0986435 095. There is another number on all of them that is the same that is 7785983. Is the new one wrong? I think it was a landrover garage that fitted it.

I will check to see if the previous owner has the receipt as i might be able to take it back as its only done about 50 mile since it was fitted. I didn't think of looking at this as it was a Landrover garage that fitted it. Charged the previous own over £300 to fit it. At least its pretty certain that is the cause of the knocking. One more question. When i fit the rubber rocker cover gasket is it advisable to fit it with a gasket sealer? If so what do you recommend?

I can't remember which way round the numbers go. But an odd injector isn't correct.

The rubber seal for the cam cover is fitted dry.
