Hi,

I run a 300 tdi Disco. I use it for regular 3t towing and weekend fun plus as a family car. I am thinking of changing it for an LPG V8 disco 2 with all the toys. Am I mad or will it be a good move, I know there is no substitute for cubes but am I looking at a servicing cost/fuel cost nightmare. If it turns out to be not much more than running a td5 then it seems to make sense as the purchase cost is much lower.

Looking forward to 8 in a V, subject to replies.

You will use TWICE the fuel or more, save NO time doing it, and become a nervous impoverished wreck.

In its favour, the V8 makes a good noise from the exhaust.

The V8 is a exceptionaly tempting beast that has had me getting my calculator out on more than one occasion and how ever I try and calculate to justifie buying a cheap one the price of one years petrol alone scares the willys out of me:eek: & 2k for a LPG conversion that's a lot of diesel!
 
Unless your Tdi is worn out or rusty I would keep it,properly looked after they are one of the most reliable and capable four wheel drives ever made.Much as I like v8's,whatever you do with them they end up more expensive than a Tdi,(or Td5 for that matter)plus the car itself,(DII) is rapidly becoming a rust trap.And the rest of the car is much more complex esp cars with ACE etc,all more to pay for.Because I earn a living fixing LR products I dont want to be working on my own,so I'll keep my 2 300Tdi's for as long as poss.
 
Mines no different to my earlier P38's. Some surface marking on the chasis but nothing more than I would expect. Passed the MOT last week and brake pipes ( original ) where fine.
 
Do you bathe it in oil ? I amazed how rusty so many are chassis wise and the rear brake pipes are a real pain to do.
I've noticed series II chassis seem to suffer from rust.
I had a 2001 Td5 in between my 300 Tdi's and the chassis on that was nowhere near as clean as either of the earlier cars. Most of the paint had flaked off the rear end of the chassis.
Bodywork was a different matter.......

are yu comparing it to a merlinv12? or a honda50 engine?

It seems a paculiar statement to make:confused:

I'm comparing it to my ordinary BMW 325i which is a straight six 192 hp pulling about 1 1/3 tonne.
The 3.5 v8 puts out between 153hp - 164hp and the 3.9 is 182hp, and pulling about 2 tonnes. The rover v8 is really underpowered for such a big car that's what i'm trying to say.

or are yu suggesting we all fit Straight6 BMW lumps in Landies?

The diesels aren't powerfull either, i know, but going through the major operation of an engine swap for a small gain in power and a big loss in economy is not that great an idea. Dont get me wrong do it if you want to but if it were me i'd try and fit a decent engine in there like a short block chevy or see if the 4.2 toyota turbo diesel will go in there.

Sooo, what ur saying is that because our engines in our landrover 4x4's aint as fast as the one in your bmw saloon we should get rid of them....?

So how come my Scania runs 44 tonnes and has 450 bhp, cruises up hill and down dale all day at 56 mph, and does better than 12 miles per gallon?

I suspect you don't quite have a good grasp of the subject yet, to be making such definitive statements.

Ere Riggaz.
Ther 3.5 stroked to 4337 with edelbrock & 390cfm Holley prodeuces 248BHP at 5000 rpm and 296ft/lb of torque at 3500RPM.

the 4337stroker on its own produces 187BHP@5000rpm and 281ft/lb@2500rpm - plenty enuf torque for most peeps and low down the rev band too - so yu dont need to rev its guts out.
