Only bloody stupid Irish git would buy a K series Freelander knowing all about them.

Mmmmm, sounds very familiar. :p

If you don't mind spending a few hundred quid more you could have a low mileage 04 or 05 car so no need to change bumpers etc.
In fact by the time you replace umpteen bushes, fuel tank cradle, brake disks etc it would be no more expensive.
Wow that project didn't last long, about as long as it took to hand over some cash !

Not sure that will relieve to much retirement boredom, unless its as a car for the U3A weekly pay and play off-roading :)

Don't bother with the MG unless you are just after the engine as a spare. I suspect that the stainless pipes is the header (exhaust manifold). This won't fit the Freelander without extensive modification. The exhaust system won't fit either, but may yield some parts to improve the Freelander exhaust.

The ECU won't work, but will have a value if sold with the alarm unit, CCU and key fobs.

as I said previous the lads think i'm as they say " da your fukn nuts { no they weren't talkin about my kahoonas } uv defo lost the plot", mrs just think when I had my accident and caught the scythe carrier unawares that I must have had a brain transplant. as my post started too much time on my hands. buyin the mx5 was a spur of the moment thing when we lifted the mrs car after hols as the dealer said he would test it for her when she bought it plus he holding it in his yard till spring time for free. Tell you what, sitting in the zoo { sorry hospital } fairly focuses the mind but also makes you delusional. The fl I eventually go for will only be an occasional driver plus I;m in no hurry to put it on the road though would be nice for my own 50th present, that said it wont matter if it sits till the following summer, would prefer to have it the way I want. Taking grumpys advice I'm beginning to think that i'm being a wee bit optimistic for what I want to do but 200 horses in a 3dr sounds like fun. Didn't get to see the mg engine today but will someday this week time allowing and will get a few pics and put them up for some feedback and advice. Just out of curiosity , will a mg engine fit into the freelander body? and what electrics etc will be affected? saw a beauty 3dr on here last night { cant remember the poster } that had been bought for less than 500 and looks amazing thinks he using it as an advert for a business. Yes alibro as I've sais before thought your blog posts on prev projects were brill and now you've got me thinkin about a lot of things like cost of upgrade parts vs buying a face lift, so away to scour the net and the adds to see whats about { where do you think best place to look ali } considering having to take in the cost of travel over to mainland and return ferry. Oh by the way do any of you fine folks know if it possible or have done to fit a set of good bucket type seats into the freelander or am I expecting too much from too little.

Waste of time mate. Plenty of K Series here in NI, look in Gumtree and type in Northern Ireland as the area.
A dead one should be free for the collection or if youngish and in great condition maybe a couple of hundred. Getting her home is expensive if far away so getting one with that's running is much better.
My 02 K series was immaculate but had laid up for a couple of years. It had suspect (but turned out to be ok) HGF so I bought it for £275 and drove it home.
Have to admit I really liked that car.

Bucket seats can be done if you can weld in the supports.
If buying a pre facelifted car get one 02 or later. The plastic trim is black so much nicer, the brakes are vastly better and it's more likely to have an upgraded ignition and cooling system. Whatever you get expect to spend another £400 - £500 sorting out the issues. More if the HG is gone.
You'll never get 200 horses from a K series without replacing it with a 1.8T which has been done but I think none of the dials worked so the guy used an after market dash, so lots of compromises s and not cheap. Having said that there is nothing wrong with the normal K Series cars when they're running well. It's not horses you want in a Freelander anyway but torques.

I sort of agree. The ECU will not have the output the ABS, HD and TC want.

But you can run the old ECU in parallel (only needs power and TPS) to provide the ABS input signal.

cheers folks sitting in hospitals or zoos as I call them leaves you with plenty of time to get silly thoughts in your head. Thinking now just buy 1 and just replace everything that's been mentioned in all the posts and then get it cosmetically as I want it. Now the oldest lad has said to me da wud u not get the 5 door instead I liked it from what I remember and I think they look better or what about a defender as i'll be getting it when u croak it anyway. cheeky baskit. be no defender as they're too expensive but would be better for the boat launching, which when I think about it will probably be the only time i'll be off-roading or parking up in the forest park or the beach if we ever get more than 2 days continuous sun over here. That was a nice 5dr u had ali. Soi'm going into this with my eyes open knowing that I could be forever @ something needing sorted but sometimes you just gotta say wat the fuk we're only here once so might as well make the most of it. Now for the run back home to get some kip speak to the mrs for 5 mins and think of how to make the 2 rats life unbearable for a few days, then back to the zoo again in the morning. Good night folks.

after a lot of faffing about and a lot of family illnesses I've finally took the plunge and bought an 05/06 td4hse 5dr which I picked up from a neighbour of my dads who didn't want to spend money on a new clutch and bought anxc60 Volvo as he needed a 7seater. Anyhow I offered him a cheeky 400 and he accepted and he told all electrics are working as they should be, no warning lights on the dash or no water in the well. Only thing I saw { I bought it blind } was the back tail door handle has come off and its through to the metal with the metal worm being the culprit. as I said I only saw it a couple of times parked beside my dads car and from a quick look at it the front tyres were slightly more worn than the rear and all the tyres seemed to have even wear across the tyre pattern. I wont get it to the new year as he has gone to Kerry to visit with relatives till 30dec but I intend to strip it out inside completely to steam clean the leather seats etc remove the carpets and door cards sound mat all the panels maybe seal the complete floor area and then sound mat it as well { is it possible } so looks like the wallet is in for a hit in new year and you good folks will be tortured for help/advice/ ridicule. will get pics up when I collect it and hopefully photo and log everything as I go along. so once again thanks for reading my rants and apologies and thanks in advance, as I stated before ive had 2 early editions 1gen petrol and then diesel so I know the pitfalls and what can go wrong but ive just had a hankering to own another one at some stage but bringing it to life the way I want it. cheers folks and again thanks, merry Christmas to you all and a peaceful, prosperous and above all healthy new year

Good luck with it. ;)
I've repaired a few boot door handles and it isn't that hard. Here are a few piccies.

cheers, ive been watching your threads since I decided I was goin to go back to a jeep as the mrs calls them, thanks for the above will be a busy couple of months in new year and hopefully the hippo wont need a pile of parts though the more I read the more I think I may change all the bushes etc before putting it back on the road, clutchfix have got back to me with a price for a hd clutch and fly wheel conversion and was actually happy surprised at the cost, would you recommend a 40mm lift and if so what size wheels would it require { not really wanting to go with big chunky tyres for real off roading } so would prefer bigger rims and sensible tyres and will that require spacers etc, as I say new to this modding carryon but have a vision in my head of what I want but within reason and cost. Thanks again ali

I haven't fitted a 40mm lift kit but have heard it is much less work than a 50mm kit
Hopefully this will help with the clutch job, but if the car is still on the original clutch I wouldn't buy a new the flywheel until you have checked it. You'll probably have to replace the master cylinder as well as the slave as they can fail during the bleed process (mine did). :(

If you do go for a lift kit the work is similar for 50 and 40 apart from the extra cutting.

If your VCU needs sorting, lots of useful info here and the best stuff is from other guys.
