The old adage of you get what you pay for is niggling away at the back of my head.

Despite this I'm looking (a lot) at a Freelander 2.0 Td4 Adventurer Hardback 3dr Diesel 2006 on for £8995 at Autotrader at the moment.

I'm starting from scatch here with Freelander knowledge, other than I know it's one of the last old style before the F2 came out.

If I could ask what you think please guys? (I'm a big boy I can take it;))

I see some bad press re the old F1 version on here and if I'm lining myself up for a wasted journey on a test drive visit I'd like to know sooner than later.:doh:

When you go to check it out start by looking at the things you would on any car
Has it got a service history, does everything work - electric windows, central locking, sun roofs etc, are there any warning lights on that shouldn't be. Does it stop in a straight line, any nasty noises, does it smoke, are there any leaks etc etc
Freelander specific things are Hill Descent Control, read up about it on here and then check it works. Some Freelanders can suffer from problems with viscous coupling, rear diff and IRd. Again read up on here before going to view it. As part of the test drive reverse slowly around a tight bend, is there any scuffing from the rear wheels or reluctance to move?
The glass in the rear door on a Freelander can be raised and lowered, and can play up, again read on here before you go and then make sure you check it
 
Is it from a dealer? Is so what is the warranty like? If it's a private sale it's way to expensive unless it's a 1 owner car with 12,000 miles on the clock. Imho anyway.
 
I've got a 2006 Freelander 2.0 Td4 Adventurer 5 door station wagon, with 61,000 on the clock and love it. I've owned it from new and never had any problems with it.

Check all the things Richard Martin, above advised on but also check it has two prop shafts. Price wise I would say it's a bit expensive but if I was selling mine I would be very happy with that price. As Nodge68, says check the warranty if it's from a dealer, if it's private knock him down and check for service history and repair bills.

also make sure the prop shaft`s are there with the VCU as i found to my cost not knowing much about Freelanders......
 
I think that is a LOT expensive mate. Look for a Freestyle, much better spec, or an SE or HSE, a decent one should be around £6-£6.5K. Echo the above checks. If it has new tyres already on all round, be suspicious. They could be to hide a shagged viscous coupling or IRD. Funny wear patterns on the tyres indicate this. Check the coolant reservoir for emulsion. Make sure the brakes work and the electrics-everything!
 
Cheers for the feedback folks, I was being led by the low mileage tbh.

On that note, what's the verdict between a F2 on an 07 plate with 60k on the clock v a F1 on a 06 plate with low mileage (such as this) both in the £9k range?

Warranties would apply and the price would obviously be haggled.

Are the late F1 models reliable? And the same for the early F2's I suppose.....

I know, I know Ferkin Newbie questions - but it is appreciated.

that is a high price for a three door as they are cheaper to buy but a bit more insurance I got a 2006 td4 auto HSE for less
 
There's an 05 or 06 HSE five door for sale privately near Wakefield with new IRD, VCU, props and tyres with 112k on the clock with an asking price of £3995, which sounds like a bargain if it is what it says it is.

;)
