Good evening all

When i turn my head lights on my window wipers also come on in my 1998 300tdi 110.

Any one had this problem in the past?

HELP HELP HELP
 
Sounds like a classic earthing fault. Check the earth connection of the wiper motor - A black wire that should be bolted to the bulkhead. You really need a voltmeter to go much further, unless you spot wiring which has been damaged.
 
I'm keen to expand my knowledge of electrickery problems. How does that put the wipers on? Why won't it be a short across the live feeds, past the wiper switch?

I thought that too, not to good with the dark art of Landy leccy either though.
 
Where about on the inner wing is it?

Mine were a proper pain in the arse to locate as they were on the inner wing next to the headlamp. I've since extended the earth and located it in a more obvious locatio.

I had to pull the wiring away from the headlamp to locate the earth.
 
Ok guys so this morning i had a look at he black earth that is fixed to the bulk head. It is in good condition but i still took it off and give it a wire brush. turned the lights on and give the wire a wiggle around and it was fine. Also i have no earths behind the headlight on the inner wing.

I have spent some time this morning playing around and i think what i first said was wrong.

The fault is when the head lights are on side or main and i indicate to go left the wipers come on.

Do you thing this is a problem in the dash or the headlight?

My bet would be the column switch or the mini loom it attaches to the main loom through.

An, just a sec, it's been a while since I drove one that new. They're separate switches aren't they? Still think it'll be a problem under the column shroud where the wires are all close together. Look for melting and charring.

Because electrikery will always take the path of least resistance ... so, if the dedicated earth return is high resistance, then the path with less resistance will be through other circuits which do have a usable earth connection ....

It might help to think of it like a water pipe with a series of progressively smaller holes in ......

A large hole will just take all the flow and "hide" the smaller holes until the large hole is sealed .... only when ALL the holes are sealed is the system water tight .... or, to go back to the 'lectrikery ... only when all the earth returns are good will the electrons stop trying to flow down the wrong bits of the circuit.....


A short across live wires is more likely to blow a fuse ... or run the affected circuit independently of other actions.... electrical weirdness of this nature is usually an earth fault - and usually an earth strap is not connected, or effectively not connected due to a mass of corrosion.

Of course, as it seems in the OP's case - it could be a multi switch which has fallen to bits internally, and is connecting all the terminals together :rolleyes:

I am still tracking this problem down.

I fitted a new earth this morning from the headlight to the earth point on the bulk head and i still have the problem.

How ever when i unplug the indicator the problem goes.

Do you thing the indicator earth is the problem?

I am just about to make a wire up for it.

Ha, ha, you need to be slightly confused at first in order to resolve the confusion and so learn! So appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate what can be going on.
I do get the earth and route of least resistance. However, in this case, I couldn't see how it would be an earth issue with the actual supply to the wiper motor not being on. ie wiper switch not activated. I'm, silently, backing faulty switches on steering column or short in that part of the loom. :oops:

Yep, but if the wiper motor earth and the heater earth are properly connected to each other, but NOT connected to a proper earth, then, turning the heater on will, quite likely make the wipers "work" as well ... as there is no where else for the heater to earth to ...

More earth straps are the answer - 'specially on any vehicle with a cable transmission hand brake ... if this ends up as the only earth - it'll work until the cable goes soft, likely melts, and then no hand brake :eek:

Earth straps need love too :D :rolleyes:

You could try it, but I still think that the problem lies under the column shroud.

How does the wiper circuit allow the wipers to operate if the switch is open? :confused: I'm missing something?
 
PROBLEM IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!

I had poor earths on the near side indicator and headlight!

Luckily i had new plugs for both so i cut the earth out and ran a brand new cable to the earth point on the bulkhead.

Been a head scratcher but enjoyed the process or elimination.
