Standard TD5 xs, want to do off roading but also use it as an every day car as is the only option. Heard that snorkels put up fuel consumption and lower HP! What to do? just axle breathers or is it all crap and I should just fit the snorkel with breathers? Also plan to fit K&N air filter (read that it's washable so should last a while)

Nope never knowen them to lower hp and give worse fuel consumption.

If you are going into deep water or wadding a lot then yes fit one with the breathers extended to do it right.

Don't just fit breather kit do the job properly
 
Super Sweet! :) Will rummage for a kit at Lro Billing, what's the ideal make to get? Considering that I want to fit an external windscreen cage, as well as an internal rollover tube.

I went with Southdown, great value for money.

I don't see how a snorkel can lower HP or put up fuel consumption. There is an article somewhere about big V8 petrol engines possibly suffering, but it doesn't apply to smaller engines and waffles on a bit. No problem with breathing, a Southdown has a larger diameter inlet and pipe than the standard 300tdi inlet behind the front wheel!

I wouldn't fit a K&N with a snorkel .. it's hardly waterproof, unless you totally enclose it, and thus negates the height a snorkel gives for wading.

I presumed the op was refering to the k&n replacement filters (rather than induction filters), so would be no less waterproof than the standard box
 
In theory a snorkel would lower HP as its adding extra restrictions into the intake system (it may be larger diameter but its still a restriction) but with any of the diesel engines then its such a minor difference thats its not noticable. A V8 thats tuned would want 2 snorkels ideally. Its the same reason drag cars use trumpets straight into the engine, less restrictions mean more air, land rovers are hardly drag cars tho lol

I would stick one on, why not. Southdown are good, safari are although imo the dfender ones look gash!

Yeah, sorry! I'm remembering my days of trying to fit fourth hand K&N's on Kawasaki triples etc ... ;)

Have you thaught of just connecting it up when wanting to offroad and then for day to day just connect back up to air box?? Just a sugestion.
 
on the power note slightly different arguement but i lengthened the output hose from the turbo to the intercooler some what and it seemed to drop the top end boost dunno if its my mind telling me or the reduction in sound from other alterations but it definately seems different, mine is tuned though so mabie a different effect

The more air you have between the turbo and engine you have the lower the boost will be, best thing to do is fit a turbo gauge in the manifold and turn the turbo up a bit, will help out. Big intercoolers add more lag and need higher boost...
 
yeah that was my thoughts, was going to increase boost but we couldn't find a t piece for the guage :rolleyes: still leaves most things standing though :p

You dont want to put the gauge on the turbo-pump pipe as this will give at the turbo reading, you want to tap a union into the manifold and take it off here, this will give you a true reading of what boost the engine is running at...

or have one on both to see how much i'm losing :p, yeah thats a good point i'll do that next time i'm tinkering :)
