Changed the oil pump and the pressure is good when cold - 55-60psi but drops to 8 psi when warm again. So I'm thinking cam or crank bearings and engine out time.

The question is do I rebuild the engine myself or buy a turners recon unit (expensive i know)? I've never stripped an engine but I'm pretty reasonable with mechanics now. Is it realistic to do myself? I read that the cam shaft needs reamed to the bearings, which I won't be able to do. Any idea on how long it would take to rebuild the block?

I am interested in peoples views on this as well as my tdi is coming up to 300k so I am contemplating getting another to fit while I then rebuild and recondition my current one.

That is something I have not had the pleasure of doing yet. I bought a recon one after my head-on that resulted in the chassis swap as time was more important than cost as I needed the vehicle back on the road.

If I can do it you can do it.
Mines a 300Tdi and I only changed the fron cam bearing shell. The cam shaft was a nice snug fit in to the new bearing. No reaming to be done. 200's might be different.

if you buy the correct cam bearings they are to size no reaming necessary, crank bearings are straight forward
 
Do the two oil pump gears rely on a certain space to the housing? Could that be worn?

That gives me a bit of confidence. It’s funny part of me is kinda glad I get to take the engine out and strip it down.
 
Could always buy a second engine and rebuild that in slow time, once done swap them over and either rebuild or sell your original?

Have you tested the compression? You'll have to decide if you are just doing the crank and cam bearings or a full refurb.
 
That was going to be my next step. I’m tempted to do a full rebuild
I would balance the investment, in terms of time and money, against the condition of the vehicle and the length of time I intended keeping it. For me it was an easy choice because I'd done the galv chassis and bulkhead rebuild.

You raise a good point. I’ve done the galv chassis too. Bulkhead is ok plan on keeping it for as long as I can. The mrs has another car so we can do with out it. Mostly use it for camping on the westcoast

Sounds like it's going to be worth the effort then :) Mine was so smooth and quiet when I started it up for the first time, it was amazing. The Mrs and I just turned and looked at each other and both mouthed 'it's so quiet'! Pulls great too.
