Hello All,
New here so be gentle..
I have a 55 plate Disco 3 HSE TDV6 and want to get it chipped to improve fuel economy. Can this be done? if so how much will it improve the MPG and what is the best chip?

Hi, the main purpose of a chip tuning is not fuel economy but more power and better throttle response on originally sluggish engines like the td5 for example which IMO should not be a problem on a tdv6 provided it's management and engine are ok, better leave it alone from this point of view and investigate why the consumption is high if it's more than normal , i'm quite reluctant about the fairy tales of noticeably reduced consumption gained this way

Thanks for your reply. I seem to be getting around 22.8 MPG even when i am driving on the motorway is that normal?
 
Despite a plethora of extravagant claims by those who sell them re-chipping is a big risk, lots over here in all sorts of CRDI powered 4X4's have been caught by the "bolt on goodies" bug, re-chip resulting in high EGT's destroying turbochargers, and general engine meltdowns. The guys who designed and built your car put a lot into optimisation for all types of use. Unless you are building a race/competition car, I reckon stay with stock and put your money into keeping it well maintained with good fit for purpose tyres/suspension etc.
The extra money you will have spent on the chip will not be reflected in what you MAY save on fuel, if indeed anything, and if the meltdown happens don't expect that the chip supplier will cough to the bill, you may end up in a very lonely place.
 
Don't forget you're driving around in a two and a quarter ton metal box with six cylinder engine and all the aerodynamics of a concrete block. If it was fuel economy you wanted you should have bought a Smart or a Volkswag.....oops sorry.
 
Chip no, as mentioned all they really do is increase fueling. Proper remap yes, tailored to your car and needs. Dynachip do a good job for a low price.

Many companies off "remapping" services for £150 or so, dont be fooled its the same as the chip. Just tricks the ECU into over fueling and some cut off the boost limit.

As for reflection in fuel economy mine has improved. Defender 90 with a roll cage and a host of other heavy off road parts with Cooper STT 265/85 tyres fitted. Did London2Brighton over the weekend and averaged 34mpg. Last year did the same run without a remap or larger intercooler and spent more time on the Mway averaged 26mpg. Thats a fair increase.

Funnily enough i do have a VW!! ;)

I don't want to ruin the car by chipping it as it's my first Disco which i have only owned for a few months. I just wanted to get some experienced owners thoughts and advice before i did anything hastily. I am about to embark on a Euro trip with family and dogs so will be doing a lot of miles. If there was a safe way to do it i would be interested.

So a proper remap tailored to the car could do the trick? Anyone else done this or have any thoughts? or is it best just to leave the car as suggested by others?

I completly agree with this, Unless its a full custom remap for a specifc purpose, but then you may struggle to sell a vehicle that has been remapped. I would keep it standard and spend your pennies on good tyres, servicing and filters to see if it improves any. Just my 2p
 
Is it not possible to get some remap files from somewhere and swap them using a nanocom?
I'm not an expert on nanocom, but if it were that easy, and gave a significant benefit without any drawbacks - wouldn't everyone with a TDV6 want it done? Perhaps i'm wrong, but generally for everyday use and a long life plus resale valve a well maintained stock example would be the way to go. IMHO
 
I am getting the car serviced before we leave.. I think from the general feedback on here I will stay clear of chipping and re-mapping for the time being. unless someone comes up with a good solution that doesn't screw the car up and that if i wanted, i could easily revert back to "factory settings" so to speak. I have recently put Pirelli Scorpions on the car which from what i hear are good tyres. Are there any particular filters out there that perform better than the genuine LR ones?
 
This is true but we all know manufactures lie ;)

If its a manual could be driving with a heavy right foot.
 
Just to put my 2p in I would like others have said KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Just pay for a GOOD servise and you wont go far wrong and just Enjoy her...
 
The car is and Auto… Maybe i need to get it on a good diagnostics machine and see if anythings up with it. It doesn't seem to move from 22.8 / 22.9 even when i do motorway miles!
