I am new to the forum so hello! I want to trade in my old TD4 F/L but do not know whether to go for low mileage TD4 or V6 (both of about 2005/6). I have heard from several sources, one a land rover dealer who said they won't stock them, that the V6 is pretty much an unreliable nightmare. I don't do much mileage so diesel/petrol economy is not that important to me. I also do notice V6's are cheaper by quite a bit for same specs (hopefully not because they're trouble). Obviously, if the likelihood is that a V6 is going to give me enormous grief I will go for TD4 but, honestly speaking, I think I would prefer the V6. Does anyone know the facts on this? I would really appreciate any advice/help.

there's 3 regulars on here who have / had V6 gaylanders.
2 of us had multiple / expensive problems and will tell you not to touch it with a bargepole.
1 will tell you that they are wonderful.

have a good look round on here and draw your own conclusions.

Hi there

I have V6 2000 yr. 1st ones made - from new

Had head gasket done in first year under warranty - apparently it happened to early ones but most should be fixed by now - don't know what they have changed !

Mine has now done 71000 and just survived another scare;

Thought maybe HG had gone again because ran hot (but not on guage) bubbled in header bottle, boiling and bubbling noises when switched off for a few seconds and black bits appearing in the bottle too !
And drinking water too - 200 miles per 500 ml on short journeys but strangely virtually none on long trips

This had gone on for a while and dealer said pressure tested and all ok , just keep topping up

Not happy so contacted independent 4x4 dealer who quoted lots for HG work but said would check it out first

Found bottom hose was not getting hot so no water circulating out of engine
Thermostat failed shut - therefore very little cooling taking place

Fairly cheap to fix and am very releived !

Lots of web forums seem to have this scaremongering about this HG problem but it is often not this atall
One chap on MG Rover forum had HG done and still same - therefore not HG problem

The V6 is a cracking vehicle - quiet, refined, as quick as the V8 Discos and Range Rovers and surprises many car owners too
It is a wonderful motorway cruiser too
mpg is about 22 running around (fairly quickly !) and we can get 25-ish with a luggage trailer and dogs on board travelling fairly quickly on motorway/dual carriageway holiday trip

Been through floods over the wheels - if you know how to do it great fun

It has been reliable apart from as above

As long as you are aware and have a contingency fund - you probably will not spend much more than on the diesel because you won't pay as much to begin with - so put some by

Shout if you want more !

Regards

Mark

Totally agree, sums up my son's 2003 V6 perfectly.

Son's V6 was £1.5k cheaper than my TD4 auto, his car had half the miles of mine and full leather, satnav, cruise control, sunroof, etc.

Hope this helps you make up your mind. John.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I also did a bit more research and think that the real question here, correct me if I'm wrong, is "do I want a BMW diesel or Rover petrol engine?" One of my best mates was a Rover fanatic but I spent a lot of time talking to him through an open bonnet! I am no mechanic and feel the BMW kit might be the safer option, despite being a bit slower and less exciting. It's a pity because I find my current TD4 a bit gutless. I could try a remap but worry it would wear the engine quicker. Any thoughts on that?

remap is good - Roverron is yo man. The TD4 has, I believe, the same torque as the KV6, so stick with yo TD4 - yu wont regret it.

TD4-----
Maximum power 160.2 PS (158.0 bhp) (117.8 kW) @ 4000 rpm
Maximum torque 400.0 Nm (295 ft·lb) (40.8 kgm) @ 2000 rpm

KV6-----
Maximum power 177.4 PS (175.0 bhp) (130.5 kW) @ 6250 rpm
Maximum torque 240.0 Nm (177 ft·lb) (24.5 kgm) @ 4000 rpm

1.8-----
Maximum power 116.6 PS (115.0 bhp) (85.8 kW) @ 5550 rpm
Maximum torque 160.0 Nm (118 ft·lb) (16.3 kgm) @ 2750 rpm

so the TD4 is down slightly on power, compared to the KV6, but beats it hands down on torque. So its much betterer than the KV6.

Thank you for the figures. No 2.5 petrol would have the 'same' torque as a 2 litre diesel. Unfortunately the 4 cylinder TD4 does not have the turbine like smoothness of a petrol V6. Still we can't have everything - horses for courses.
