I have just blanked my TD5 defender. I have noticed no difference as yet. My previous 300TDI it was obvious straight away.

If you got the kit to do it then why wait ???? as stated in sh1t stacks of threads all the egr does is cake up your intake system on a newish motor you probably wont notice much difference

Blank it off you wont notice difference, but its there, very slight on power and a little better on fuel, what do you want for £2

please don't blank it off.. at least till you understand what it does....

The EGR valve is designed to increase the life of various components of the car, including the turbo. It is also intended to reduce the amount of nitrous oxide in the exhaust emissions...

CO2 is introduced to cool the exhaust gases and reduce NOx as well as the temperatures of the exhaust gasses.

This is twofold:

1. As mentioned earlier it is done to reduce NOx and meet the latest tough emission figures for Euro 1V compliance and later.

And 2. far more importantly to improve the engine's performance by reducing the turbo temperatures. This in turn leads to the temperature of the air entering the intercooler to be reduced and also increases the life of the turbine shaft bearings for obvious reasons.

now the problem with EGR valves is simply that they wear out, electronically controlled ones wear out due to the electronics failing, mech ones wear out due to coking up caused by too much running around at low revs..

the answer - an italian tune up is a must have service procedure for a derv engine, at least once a month when your main driving is slow or low revs...

if the egr valve fails, get it fixed... if it hasn't failed leave it alone...

BTW if your valve fails you will notice some or all of an increase in fuel consumption, extra smoke and less power.. this is why people feel that blanking an egr will improve fuel economy or reduce smoking... it is usually done on old cars which have a dodgy egr and so the symptoms of the dodgy egr are 'cured' by the blanking of it...

not preaching, you do what you like but NOT blanking your EGR is better for the environment and your car

get it chipped ratty... it'll go like stink!

I am highly tempted to.

I need to find out if I can get my ECU flashed or if I need to go for a plug in type chip. Cos it's a 1999 TD5 it may not be possible to flash it.

Reet av just orderd a blanking kit fae fleebay cos every fred av read says how its one o the best fings tae do,,, (fir fuel economy an performance) an now you are sayin its not a good idea,,,

Mines a 1999 TD5 disco, the guys cut the chip out of the ECU and soldered in a new one that was flashable...

Worth every penny... best money I ever spent on that car, transformed it!

How much did it set you back?

After I read this post I thought I'd do some research before blanking mine off today, the main reason I found for having an EGR is for reducing NOx emissions and to help in controlling the turbo's temperature, it's downside is stifling engine power and increased fuel consumption....so ultimately do you pollute by increased NOx or by using more fuel?

As for the enviroment the humble cow and it's rearing process is doing more damage than our Landy's ever could, so do we do ditch our EGR's or ditch the BigMuck burger?

After blanking my EGR valve on advice from this website I noticed a small difference in performance and economy, but last week I took the cat off and fitted a straight through job, and soaked the intercooler in Kero for 2 days then rinsed it out with clean petrol. When I put it back together my 300TDI was far better, I noticed a huge difference. It went well before but flies now. On looking at the EGR where the pipe joins the inlet feed from the intercooler to the inlet manifold, it is not good engineering practice to run a flow of air from the EGR against the turbo flow of air like this Y pipe does, it must restrict it somewhat ???? Mick.

I got a good deal from 'JE Engineering' in coventry.
they were doing a half price offer...

it cost me just under £300, but 50-60 of that was a new MAF at the same time as mine wasn't reading properly.

would highly recommend these guys...

When I have got my finances back in check I'll give em a go:)

Do you know if the new chip looks any different than the old one? I'm thinking of doing this to my year 2000 Disco and would like to keep the upgrade on the QT. Just in case the wife goes poking around inside the ECU;)

Hi Guys.

Well did the egr jobby, and it certainly seems to have more Grunt, will try the girl on a run tomorrow and see if the fuel economy is any different.

Did mine on thursday whilst replacing the turbo pipes, took it for a small run next day and she definately feels more eager to go:D.

basically if your egr valve is functioning correctly the only likely change you will cause by blanking it is to increase the amount of No2 emissions and reduce the life of your turbo

if it is fubar then blanking it will cure the symptoms of a fubar egr valve so making it seem as if you have more power and reduced fuel consumption.

I am not saying I would never blank one but I would never blank a working one... if you are having smoke problems or performance issues that can't be pinned down to anything else then blanking it is a reasonable way out...

I'd probably agree. Blanked mine (1999 TD5) and it returned the performance to what it used to be. Engine had got noisy and a bit low on power - pretty sure this was because the valve had stuck open.
