Hi guys,

I'm sure I've moaned about it but couldn't find the thread.. so I'll start another thread to moan on.

110 with salisbury axle and the diff is not making healthy noises, nothing unusual there but it's beginning to get to me - at least enough to start another thread.

I can't find anywhere online that would sell me a refurbished salisbury diff - I'd like a detroit truetrac added at the same time. If you know of a supplier I'd be keen to know, although I'm going off the idea.

Otherwise it's an axle swap, on cost I think something from a breakers would be up to it. All the usual arguments as per the link (https://www.landroverexpedition.com...-salisbury-axle-with-a-td5puma-110-rear-axle/)

Any final comments before I take the plunge?

I run a disco rear axle on the Hicap no worries. It makes sourcing parts easier than the Salisbury.
probably cheaper to put a locker in it than the old axle
Even as spares you should be able to get a nice price for it.

Cheers Phil,

Without going through a parts catalogue will any of the Salisbury axle parts fit a TD5/ puma axle, disks/hubs etc. Just wondering how much I should budget for.

I thought that was a “no no”? Something to do with the weight rating between a 110 and discovery?

Detroit lockers are now owned by Eaton Transmissions. They have UK dealers. Try phoning them, find out who sells Detroits near you.

Defender is 4000Kg with coupled brakes, but after that is a guess. It should be 3500Kg, but some station wagons are 3050Kg.
Discoveries are 3500Kg I think.
I think that is because some 110 Station Wagons are so heavy that it goes over the maximum permitted train weight if you have a 3500 kg trailer.

That makes sense to me. There are some other funny weights mentioned if you google “Defender 110 tow capacity”. I think some people may have got a “Friday special”.

I just go with what is says in the owners book. The makers should know.

The ones on the net are apparently from their VIN plate on the master cylinder. I wouldn’t trust the book personally, just the plate. I don’t think the authorities will use the book of anything goes wrong, but I bet they would use the plate, even if it is easy to tamper with.

Edit: just checked mine. It’s 2950 GVW and 6450 GTW, 1992 200tdi 110 CSW.

youd find someone to fix yours and add the locker at the same time,we used to do quite a few 10 or more years back,

Could be. I think the info in the book that comes with the vehicle is the same as on the plate for that vehicle.
I used to tow quite a lot with Series, and I don't think some of them even had VIN plates, or if they did, they were long gone by the time I had them.

I can quite imagine a stuck up traffic officer pulling you over for being “over loaded”. Asking to see the VIN plate, and the look of shock and awe as he/she finds out it’s gone.

Most traffic police are pretty clueless when it comes to older vehicles, so they just ignore you.
And in fact, there is little enforcement of the regs. When I used to take cattle into market with a trailer behind my Ninety, I was always surprised to see how many 3500kg trailers were coming in behind Hilux etc.

You are in Bedfordshire so why not give Ashcroft a call?
They sell a few different makes but I don't know if they offer an axle rebuild service or if they only take diffs.
