there's 3 def's on there i'm seriously being tempted by (all the 110 SW- got a lot of people to move about and my volvo just doesn't cut the mustard anymore)

i've had a look at the buying guides and all sorts, but what i'm wondering is...
what about you lot and your 1st def?

also any tips on security would be good :D picked up one of these

after a recommendation form the latebay (vw bus forum) and i was thinking of welding together a couple of bars to lock the gears in perhaps 3rd, low range (prevent a low-loader drag on?)

any kind (or not so kind :D) word appreciated
 
My first defender was rusty and crap. I loved it. it was the best i could afford at 17 and to be fair, i needed a **** one to learn on. it always needed something and it taught me a lot about axles clutches and engines just through having to fix it myself due to lack of funds.

My only advice on buying a defender is that rust is expensive to fix, and if you take your time and decide what you want / need before you buy you could keep it for life.
 
i totally agree with you tom69. these one's look alright, but what nasties are there underneath!?
i've got a decent TIG welder and can pick up plate etc cheap, but hoping for a decent chassis at least.

love the way everythings bolt-on-bolt-off though.
btw, that's a tidy one you're rolling now :D

if your realistic you do understand metal..

i would get a 60x40 barn and spread the vehicle out in bits,rework and galvanise/replace the chassis and refit the rest as required with suitable modifactions you will invent if your a welder for the better end up with a good landy,

Thanks, I spent along time looking for it. I always wanted a new td5 but just didnt have the funds 5 years ago. I cant get in a tdci comfortably (6'4" - 17.5 stone) so i wanted the best td5 i could find.

A bit like you, I was happy to wait because it had to be right. I bought my 56 reg 90 csw back in the summer. It was one owner flrsh with 26000 miles on it. It was advertised at 15,500 but cash on the day seems to get the dealers orgasmic, and i got it for £13k.

Dont rush into anything. It took me 8 months of looking after I decided what I wanted. The only down side is that i wont ever be able to replace it like for like. God forbid if it got stolen id have real difficulty finding a td5 the same as mine with its low miles for the same money.
 
If your looking at spending 5K plust you should be buying a tdi in tip top condition that needs nothing. Rust free or possibly galve chassis.

Do Not Compromise On Condition on a 5k tdi.

but it'll have to be a bit of a rolling project as i'm probably selling the car to cover it (and the motorbike doesn't like the cold or the wet- pretty useful in NI)

i'll be looking at these next saturday probably, maybe grab one at the end of the month if they're decent.

as for repalcing / galvo the chassis- we're talking big money aren't we?

buy a disco and learn for a couple of years ....then buy a defender...:welcome:
 
Ive always wondered about these gear lock things, it would probably be better if it locked them in low range neutral that way it couldnt be moved into gear.. otherwise 3rd low i could just drive mine off :D

that's true. but drive it forwards :D my idea would be to nosey park it in the drive, and being locked in gear would prevent it being dragged onto a low loader.... and drive offs :)

then again, if they want it, they WANT it. some seriously sad stories in the stolen section.

But low range neatrual there is no way they could move into gear, pull it into 2nd or 4th and it pulls into neutral box, and it wont go into 1st, 3rd and 5th
