I'm looking for a manual 3 or 5 door TD4 and can just about afford the 2004 facelift model. Is there any difference in costs/reliability between this and the previous 2003 model? Is it worth the extra money?
Any nasties to look out for?
Any advice gratefully received.

They are great cars, ignore the prats which suggest they are crap as any other vehicle on the road is just as bad! Obviously check service history etc and ask if the vcu oil has been changed Regularly check tyres not worn unevenly etc

Should be good......, It'll save us all loads of dosh and worry....just change yer vcu..... oil? at every service.:pop2:
I'm sure he must mean either engine, ird or diff oil.

Hi the td4 has the sound BMW engine look for one thats been looked after, check all tyres are the same size , look under the car check that the propshafts/vcu are there ! take it for a run and feel the vcu if its hot theres a problem look for any oil leaks at the inner driveshaft joints to/ird/finaldrive plenty of info on here goodluck :)

hi I do not know why people put nasty things about freelanders if they really dislike them then why o why are they on this site easy to tell if your vcu and bearings on the vcu are going it will give a dry running sound through the floor and you will get a vibration when putting your foot down I have just done mine part from freelander spares (Durham) i rubbished these before because I had trouble with a drive shaft but I take it all back very helfull people my car now feels like a new one smooth running and no harse gear changing and NO vibration rumbling make sure you service it properly air fillter, turbo vent filter, oil filter and good oil and it will run and run
hope this helps

td4 auto 163.700 miles

Freelanders require love to run! FACT!

If it drives nice , its probably in good condition. All the faults you get on FL1 Td4 are drivetrain related pretty much, so if it feels nice to drive, then all is probably cushty!

Apart from that depending on mileage i might be tempted to throw a VCU on it when i bought it , just to keep all my other drivetrain components happy and also a rocker breather filter.
