Watch out for the older motors having the old turbo diesel engine designated 19j.
Do not assume because the seller says its a 200/300 means it actually is!
200tdi 89 to 93 approx
300tdi 94 to 98 approx

My advice would be take someone with you who knows what they're looking at, and buy the very best your budget allows.

I'll reiterate what's already been said - they're all ongoing projects so don' think once you sort it that'll be it, as it won't be....

thanks for the advice i've just asked a family friend for some advice
he has owned land rovers since he was 15 now 42 and has had around 23 of them so he knows his stuff.
his greatest bit of advice to me was to stay away from them :)
he will come with me to view any that i like the look of
thank you to all for the advice

I recently bought one.

Budget hours , intact days for maintenace . money ain't the problem, it takes serious patience to practice maintenqnce . Haynes manual is pathetic.

Nearer to the truth than you think mate - certainly a lot nearer than I thought....

Thats my advice to most people, I always had a snag list of stuff to do on the thing.
Since buying a D3 I suddenly have shed loads of spare time!

Check your insurance if your only just 18 - a defender could easily swallow up a third of your budget leaving you not a lot to buy a vehicle with.

Don't rule out a series Land Rover, cheaper to insure and buy and not dissimilar to 99/110 era vehicles - okay they are a bit more 'tractor' like but they are excellent, you could get a nice one for about 3k
