How do I adjust/check the timing on a 2.25 diesel series 3????

I can do petrol engines and strobe light etc, but diesel, its beyond me.......

Any idiot proof way of doing it, guess you cant use a strobe can you??:confused:
 
not unless you got a doosul impulse reactor strobe.;ah think you just need to make sure some marks line up but ah duuno what they might be...int ye got a book?
 
Time to by a book then.
There is a mark on the Injector pump which lines up with a line on the block, the injector pump uses the same drive from the cam as the distributor on a petrol engine. You loosen the 3 bolts that attach the injector pump, the pump is then free to rotate as the bolts sit in slots. Move the pump Clockwise or Anti-clockwise either side of the mark to see which way the engine runs better. try moving it a bit one way , tighten it up, give it a go and so on, lots of trial and error.
All this assumes that you have'nt taken the Pump of in the first place and really buggered the timing up.
 
To do it properly you need a special tool to get thebacklash out from between the camshaft and the rotaty pump. Timing marks are on flywheel. Dont rely on any around timing chain. Good luck they are a bas---d to time properly. --------BB

Just checking. Turn the unit clockwise to advance and anti-clockwise to retard the timing, yeah?

Hope so. I've just this minute turned mine about 2mm clockwise and I haven't got time to muck about putting it the other way before I go out in it...
 
I reckon you're better off checking the camshaft timing first - the pump is connected to the camshaft if that is out then you're probably wasting your time (pun intended)

'Ave a look in the book (site linked above) - EP mark on the flywheel - compare with valve drop (zero backlash) - read the book on how to do it!
 
I do hope you are slackening the pipe unions when buggering about moving the pump. If not expect a nipple to break off any time soon. To get a diesel timed up is not that hard but you do need a timing chain in good condition and the cam set correctly. Try and borrow a timing tool to do the initial setting or read the book and do the 20 degree setting thing. Once set do some fine tuning by moving the pump a millimeter at a time to advance or retard, you will be slackening the unions to do this...... It is also worth checking the injector spray pattern and get hold of a gauge to check injector pressure settings. 130/135 bar is correct, do not rely on so called diesel injector reconditioners to get this right I had a set done that varied from 120 to 165.
 
I'm back on this (been away working for a few weeks) and getting ready to have a look again tomorrow. I did move it clockwise about 1mm after asking the first time but before I saw the posts from divie and rob1.

Time to get the book out tomorrow then.
