Hi since i've changed the engine in the 90 i've had a squeaking noise coming from the front of the engine - so i changed the tensioner bearing.............. still squeaking :(

Today i removed the viscous fan and the squeaking is still there but not as loud................

Looking at the belt idler on the timing cover i can see that its wobbling slightly with the engine running - so i'm thinking that the bearing in the idler is knackered................

The question is: can the timing cover bearing be replaced ???
 
300tdi - have done a quick google and you can replace it IF you can source the correct bearing................... don't fancy £200 to sort it out :D
 
The bearing will be a standard bearing, in as much as it will be available from any bearing supplier. Get the dimensions and I'll find you the bearing as fitted or better.
 
shouldnt be a problem. Standard roller bearing, they come in all shapes and sizes. Wouldnt be much of an issue sourcing something like that. Getting it pressed into the timing cover without cracking it... have fun!

its not that easy ive tried finding them cheap amongst bearing factors but it would be interesting if you know of a source
 
I think the spindle is part of the bearing assembly - the only one i've found is the one on OZ ebay - good pic of it there too..................
 
That what I thought so you got to press it out of an alloy housing and press the new one back in
First would this not stress the alloy ? Second the pully mounting plate will have to be removed so assuming that it pops off you will have to press it back on
IMO this may cause a head ake for people who donot have a press
 
I read earlier that a guy put his cover in the oven at gas mark 6 for 30 mins - took it out and put it on 2 bits of wood and tapped the bearing and it fell out......................

He didn't happen to update the thread about finding a replacement bearing though :(

Did read another post where the guy had found a shorter belt and removed the fan and pulley and the belt tensioner and fabricated a slider mechanism for the alternator so he could tension the belt properly - as when you bypass the fan idler the normal tensioner doesn't give enough tension.......
