I have a Freelander 2.5 (2001) and am receiving conflicting reports about whether it has a belt or chain. Even though my local Land Rover dealer tells me it is a chain I have a reliable source which tells me it is a belt. Also I cannot find any infoirmation about when it should be changed. Can anybody help please?

V6 petrol 2.5, belt driven ,Change every 72k miles, or when Hg fails whichever soonest;)

welcome by the way:D

Hi Mondo - thanks for the advice. Just shows that Land Rover main dealer's are always that clued up. I am only at 28000 miles so should have a bit of leeway left before I need to consider changing. H1REC :)

Hi Mondo - just realised that you mentioned Hg in your reply. I knew these were a weak point on the 1.8 but do they have a similar history on the 2.5? Regards H1REC

Pop down the freelander bit and have a read, A few have had hg fail ,not to the extent of the 1.8,

I thought that the timing belts were changed at 90K. I used to have an MG ZS with the same V6 and it was a very expensive affair with most places taking the engine out to do it as it was quicker.
