another pump will have a price,recon £500 ish ,pumps have no key way for drive flange so if its not fitted its not just a matter of fitting one, but would be simpler for someone to set timing ,good news is that its doesnt sound like engine is knackered

When you change the sprocket,you have to lock the pump first timed up-(bolt on side of pump,remove thick spacer washer)-then undo very tight nut without putting load on pump shaft or lock bolt-swap sprockets and reassemble in reverse order.
I would doubt he knew all this so I guess your timing is anywhere.
Resetting a "lost timing"pump is beyond a diy as far as I know as there is no keyway in the sprocket (there is on the shaft though,but of no use)
You have 2 choices:
1.send pump to diesel specialist to set up properly
2.obtain another pump ebay or similar,but must have sprocket on ie still be timed
 
This is sounding like a job beyond my abilities. Let's wait and see what the mechanic says tomorrow.
 
Could your dad take the pump off and you send it ,take it to a diesel specialist to have the sprocket put on in right place-then if your dad refits the pump,Maybe Barmatt or someone else just needs to fit the cambelt for you
 
think its beyond me and dad lol ive priced up some pumps on ebay but will make some calls today about getting this one sorted ty for all your help i will keep u updated ;)
 
this is really bad luck, changing a timing belt on a 300tdi is really quite easy - as long as young play by the rules, sounds like the chap who did yours really messed it up - lesson learned there is dont let him near it again, he knows nowt about discos. I assume he wasnt some sort of professional who you can extract some sort of compo out of with the threat of kneecappin :).
as the previous posts have said the disco is really a simple beast, take you time and ask lots of questions on here (politely) and you'll get some good advice, you've had a bad experience, have a cuppa, chill then remember -you can pick up a whole engine for not much more than £300 and swapping engines is a lot easier than it sounds.
lot of guys on here will do anything for the promise of beer and bacon butties :D

lol and no kneecapping is out of the question although has crossed my mind thank you for all the advice i hope to have someone (a proper person) look at it next week but if it is the engine i will have to sell her for scrap i have £200 at the most to try and sort her out :(
 
It is almost definitely the pump being set wrong that is causing the awkward start and loud knocking-pump set up properly and timing belt on correctly,I reckon she will run good.
 
if its def him whats broke it then trust me i will be having a go bad idea to cross a woman lets hope i have PMT on that day too lol
 
me and dad are about to go out there with spanners and socket set maybe a club hammer and see what we can do between us even if we can get the front stripped to check timing anything is a start wish us luck lol i will prob be back on here later asking how to put it all back together :D
 
right update im covered in grease we have checked timing and crankshaft bold was hanging out by about a inch we have also took rocker off and turned engine by hand and and all under there is moving as it should and no exsessive play we have left it all stripped down for a proper mechanic to put new fuel pump on which should be here soon :)
 
As long as the key way slot in the pulley is still good and the key itself is still square you are probably alright-why on earth didn't he tighten it up-this will have been some of the knocking you heard.Will the pulley go completely home with no lateral play(side to side movement)?

well all i can tell u is that that big bolt at the bottom in the shaft tightened right up with no problems we took it right out checked the thread on the bolt and put it back we turned the engine over by hand and heard no noises and it turned over by hand with ease it didnt jam or go stiff :eek:

you could feel compression though,as you were turning it over presumably?
Do the timing marks line up,if you have the timing cover removed?
 
yes timing looked like it all lined up and all i can say is when i was turnin it over by hand it was quite hard (it made me sweat) this is while the rocker cover was off i have no idea what i am doing lol but it didnt stick or jam up :eek:
