I’m going to change timing belt on my 1998 Defender 90 300Tdi
I believe I only need belt and not kit as my engine is later one?
Looking on paddocks website I can get a Dayco one which says it’s OEM for £13 or genuine one for £55 and this states OEM
I don’t mind paying the extra but not if they are the same belt in different packaging or is there a different brand I should consider?

cheers in advance

Gates or dayco

You should change the idler/tensioner at the same time as the belt

Dayco are a reputable brand. My personal preference is Gates, but I've used Dayco plenty of times with no problems (albeit not on a Defender).

Just be carefully that whichever brand choose, it's not a.fake. There have been reports of fake belts packaged as well known brands. The clue is usually in the price. I wouldn't buy something as important as a timing belt for £13

That’s why I bought my kit from Rimmers just to be on the safe side.

The last Dayco I had said PRC for the manufacturing country of origin. I now will only buy Gates and from a reputable supplier.
