Hi All,

My MOT is booked for tomorrow evening, and low and behold I’ve lost drive to the rear wheels this morning. The prop shaft isn’t turning so I know it’s not the rear half shafts. Front wheel drive is working so I’m going to take a guess that it’s the RWD main shaft / or the flange. Can anyone tell me know long this would take to rebuild as I don’t want to pull the transfer box out and not have it ready for MOT. I Should be able to pass the MOT in Front wheel drive although it is concerning that I might do more damage.

Any responses are much appreciated!

Cheers

I can't see it being the flange, a broken shaft is possible and I would be wary of driving it in case you churn metal chips around and damage a bearing. I think the other problem with the MOT is the rolling road brake test as they want the vehicle in 2WD and may be wary of doing a brake test in 4wd with the prop still on as there have been some nasty accidents. Surely if its the rear drive shaft the parking brake will not work and you would fail? The only place it can fail and still have a working parking brake is outside the transfer box after the flange as this carries the drum, if it was there you would see it.

Thanks for the reply Rob.

All of a sudden without doing anything it is working again. Seems to be a lot of play in the rear prop about 1/8th turn.

Will post an update if anything changes...

Do you have overdrive? If my lever isn't fully up I get no drive at all-if the lever is knocked down and drops very slightly I engage gear but nothing happens. It happened a few times when I was out and it was annoying. Found the cure by accident.

Agreed, both overdrive and H/L range levers get sloppy and bent and the geomentry changes, especially the H/L range lever. If you have OD as I do then there seem to be at least 3 ways to end up in neutral.

UPDATE:

Thanks a million guys, had a good inspection of the high/low selector and discovered it wasn’t going into high box properly, just needs a firm push into high and all sorted.

Took the opportunity to change the overdrive and transfer oil anyway.

Thanks for the help!

Stuart
